So, I had my first mammogram today. She checked it all out and told me I was good and to have a nice day. Now, when do I find out if anything showed up? Would they call? Can you tell I'm worried?

Shelby

I am not sure. The place I have mine done you do not leave until you have the results.
I hope it all works out. Try not to worry.

The radiologist probably reads it within 24 hours or that day. If there is a problem, they will notify you or your physician. If you are concerned, call. I see a radiologist, who, after the technician takes the films, sits with me and reviews the films. Every office is different, but you are entitled to call, ask and get an answer.

Depends upon where you have it done. I did not get my first results until days later (had to go back for more "views" and then an US).

Next year, I had the radiologist "there" when I had the Mammo so I could get results immediately. Yep, needed another US.

Now, I just make sure the radiologist is there.

just be wary of those that promise 'same day' results on screenings. oftentimes the radiologist is overwhelmed and may miss a cancer. for example, in our office, the radiologist reads the screenings before and after clinic, when things are quiet. During clinics, we are seeing diagnostics and recalls and they concentrate on those. I use to work for an independent radiologist who missed ALOT of cancers trying to run too many people thru. If you go to a place that reads right away, make sure they have more than one doc there, otherwise you may be taking a big chance.

Think about this too: how many tests do you get the results right away? blood work, no. regular xray, no. ekg, no.
Quick results do not mean right results.

In the place where I go, normally you get a letter within a week that everything is OK. If there's a problem, they call you for a rerun in a day or two.

I've got a history of breast cancer though, and for people like me, they have the radiologist look at it while I wait.

I guess everyplace is different, give them a ring and ask when to expect the results if you are worrying about it.

I go to a breast care centre and they do a mammogram and the doctor does an ultrasound discussing both results with you at the appointment. It's a great system as the waiting can have you worrying about nothing.

Give them a call and put your mind at rest.

Where I go, two radiologists have to sign off on the final results but they're generally available to my oncologist by the end of the day or by the next day. On the day of, they don't let me leave until a radiologist gives them a good once over. Mine take a while to read also due to scar tissue from surgery and biopsy sites. Last time I had them done many people came and went while I practically dozed off in the waiting room, I was even starting to worry a bit myself.

Shelby, can your oncologist or primary care doc check on them for you? Hang in there.

I just had mine done. They mailed me the results because they were normal. It took 1 week. Had it been abnormal, I would have found out via phone call, probably within 48 hours.

While we are talking about mammograms, does everyone always try to go to the same place every year?
It is advised.
