How long does it take to format an Ipod?

Really? It's been like 1/2 an hour! And it's still going or says it is.

What message are you getting?

What type of Ipod is it?

Are you getting the "Do Not Disconnect" message?
Is your computer Windows or Mac?

Yes, Do not disconnect. Windows XP. Brand new computer I just set up last night.

The iPod will say 'Do Not Disconnect' until you click on the icon on your task bar and disconnect it from the system. Not physically disconnecting it, but disconnecting the software. The way you can tell if it's finished is to check iTunes.

Okay this is a typical thing with Ipod and Windows.
Here is what I do.

1) Close Itunes
2) Open Itunes back up
3) In the left panel of Itunes your Ipod should be listed.
4) To the RIGHT of it is a grey arrow pointing up
5) Click on it, this will "eject" your Ipod and the message should go away and then you can safely remove the Ipod from the computer

I got it to "Safely remove hardware". I am trying to install ITunes to my computer. I had to restart that program and then it said my IPod didn't need to be formatted any more.

Jenn, I just edited my directions above your post. Try that. It should work as well. I'm not sure if that way is better than the other way though.

Everything is working now. Already downloaded some of my CD's onto my IPod.
