I am 42 years old and do not know how long it takes to boil an egg. My son's fiancee asked me and I said 3 minutes, but then they did not seem done. Please help!

Thats usually about how long I boil them. I don't start timing them until the water is at a full rapid boil though.

I dont know that but it takes about 30 seconds to eat one

to hard boil, I put the eggs in cold water (cover them about an inch above the eggs with water)....bring to a boil (a good one for about 1-2 minutes) Turn off the heat and cover for 20 minutes.

Immediately rinse and let sit in cold water...the colder the better for peeling....I even sit them in ice water and keep adding ice

There are many different variations that people have to hard boil eggs...but this is what I have always done

I put them in cold water, let them boil for 3 minutes and then soak them in cold water until they are at least room temp before peeling

After pot has come to a full boil, add eggs, return water to full boil, boil for 15 minutes. Rinse immed. in cold water then cool in cold water in fridge.

Recently Emeril gave his method and it was much shorter. I tried it and it was great but now I've forgotten the actual timing.

It was basically similar to what you've already heard here....cover about an inch with cold water. Bring to a full boil. Now, here's where the timing gets dicey. I think it was boil for 3 minutes then remove from heat and cover for 5 minutes. Then run them under very cold water to stop the cooking. Emeril said less cooking would keep the yolks from getting that green rim.

to hard boil I cover eggs with cold water, bring to boil then simmer for 12. Immediately plunge in cold water. works great every time!

If you add a little white vinegar to the water the shells won't break while they are cooking.

For soft boiled eggs - boil water, add egg, boil for 3 minutes, cool immediately under cold water

For hard boiled eggs - add eggs to cold water, bring to boil, boil 10 minutes, cool under cold water

This is exactly how I was taught to "boil" eggs. If you do it this way, the yolks stay bright and yellow and don't turn green. (Yuck!) Sometimes I let them sit for in the hot water for 25 minutes - especially if they are particularly large eggs.
