How long does a fraud claim take to come off credit card?

I made a hotel reservation last month for next year. They called me the other day and asked me to go down to the desk. They checked me in and charged my card for two nites. Telling me people were in the room. So I called and canceled card. Filed a fraud report. Not liable for any of it. But how long does it take for charges to fall off like that? Turns out no one was in the room. They had checked me in. So now I wait for a new card... But my card has the charges.
What a mess... ugh

It sounds to me like the OP filed a fraud report for something that turned out not to be fraud, but in fact, just the hotel's mistake.

OP, I don't know how long it lasts for sure (I think years), but it's not too much of a nuisance to deal with. My SO had to file one in 2003 after someone opened cards in his name at their address. After that, he would get called a little more often if charges came from unusual places (like when we went on vacation), but that's about it.

I don't know exactly what is not laid out to understand... I had a hotel check me in and charge me when I wasnt there.
I just was curious being the budget board and all... If someone had some idea as to how long disputed charges take to come off a credit card.
Not sure why the link to the other thread was included?
I have never had to cancel a card before for fraudulent charges. Just had some legitimate questions.
When the hotel first called they told me someone was there in the room. Which is why I filed it as fraud. Hotel called back after to tell me it was their mistake.

I read your first post several times and still do not understand it, but no need to be offended.

I filed a dispute once and it was removed almost immediately (a couple days) with the pretense that they were investigating and if it was proven to be fraud it would stay off and interest charges reversed. Whole process was about 6 wks.

Thank you!
The finance charges were a concern.

The way your post reads:
1) You made a hotel reservation for next year
2) The hotel called you and asked you to come to the check-in desk
3) The hotel checked you in and charged you 2 nights, stating the room was occupied
4) You called your card issuer and canceled the card
5) You filed a fraud report somewhere
6) You believe that you are not responsible for any charges
7) You learned that the room was unused/vacant, even though the hotel had checked you into that room
8) You want to know how long it takes for the fraud investigation and reversal of any charges after the investigation is completed

OP, is this what you meant?

Are you asking how long until it is fully resolved or how long until the transaction is placed in a dispute status? Sometimes a conditional credit is issued while the dispute is being investigated, but sometimes the transaction is just placed in dispute, which means that you will not need to make a payment for it and it will not accrue interest charges.

So is this a local hotel?
I'm guessing when you made the reservation for next year, it is possible they put 2013 on the reservation instead of 2014. That is why they called.
You went and they checked you in.
This would be a merchant dispute. I would dispute first with the hotel then with the credit card.

My only experience was they immediately took the charge off my account pending further investigation. About 6 weeks later I got a letter in the mail saying the investigation was complete and the charge was not mine, and the charge was permanently removed.

I made a reservation online for March. They checked me in one day last week. The hotel called me asking me to go down to the front desk since the card on file was declined. They had maxed that one out. When I told her I was 2000 miles away she freaked that someone was in that room. I immediately called and canceled the card with the issuer. Went in as fraud. Then the hotel called back half hour later that no one was in the room and they had accidentally checked me in. I have never heard of such a thing before.
As of right now the charges are on my account. I was curious as to how long it typically takes a card company to resolve an issue like this. I don't think the hotel can reverse the charges cause the card is canceled.
It all could be worse. It was presented to me as a fraud issue. Now it seems as a internal issue.
I just don't like the charges on my card. Just wanted to know if anyone had any experience like this.

They can issue a credit to the card even though the card is closed. The dispute process itself can be lengthy and take up to 2 statement cycles to be resolved. Most of the time your bank will issue a conditional credit while the dispute is ongoing. Of the case is resolved in your favor, the credit will become permanent.

Why don't you ask the hotel to reverse the charge?

This makes the most sense. If the hotel made a mistake I would think they would just issue a credit. No need really to call it fraud when it was just a mistake.

I used to work for a bank AND a credit card company.

In order to dispute a charge you MUST give the merchant the opportunity to fix it first - you need to call the hotel and demand (yes, DEMAND) that they IMMEDIATELY credit the account. I would speak to the general manager about it. Depending on what chain it is (if it's a 'good' one or a budget one) you may even end up with your stay for free for the inconvenience.

But if you do not give the merchant a chance to correct the error, the dispute may come back not in your favor.

Can they reverse to a card that has been closed?
When the woman called and said the room was occupied by someone using my info I immediately closed the card.

They can issue a credit to a card that has been closed.

You would start by reporting it to the merchant (hotel, etc.) as an error or a dispute, not as fraud.

You can do it as soon as you know that an erroneous charge showed up on your account, which might be not until you got your next credit card statement. If you per chance went online sooner, you might see the charge before you got your statement.

If the merchant does not respond or does not have humans answering phones, then after a week or two you may report it to your credit card company with no further interaction with the merchant.

If you never heard of that merchant or never did business with them then you may start by going directly to your credit card company. Dealing with your credit card company has to be in writing.

Even if you are actively in the process of dealing with the merchant, if it is taking a lot of time then report it to your credit card company within the deadline (usually 60 days but might be less).
