How long do magicbands work?

I thought I heard 2 years? Is this right? We have 3 bands of different colors from Jan 2014. DD would switch back and forth so it matched her outfit If they last 2 years then she was going to order different colors, since we will be getting 3 more for our September trip.

There are two different parts of the band at work here; the passive, near field part and the active long-range part. The long range part is used for ride photos and food delivery at Be Our Guest. It requires power and the battery life is rated for two years. The near field is used when you touch the magic band to a reader, such as for park entry at the tapstiles or charging purchases to your room. That function doesn't require power and will work forever.
