How long did your desktop computer last?

I have a Dell desktop from 2007 (Windows Vista) that is running really slow, but **knock on wood*** it still is here. I use it because I read a lot of pdfs for work on it and I like the big screen.

So what is the lifespan of a desktop? I can't remember how long my previous one lasted.

Thanks!
karenos;)

The guts of mine is from December 2008 so almost 4 years old. It's running slow sometimes as well and gets caught up a lot. I wouldn't try to do anything to crazy on it either but it's still chugging.

Mine gave up the ghost a month and a half ago and I'd had it just about 4 years

Waiting now for the after Christmas sales to get a new one :)

Our first Macintosh lasted 9 years and was still working but was terribly slow when we got the new one.

Our new one is 3 years old.

Our desktop is from 2004 or 2005. It was running very slow so we upgraded the memory and it works great now. It doesn't get used all that much any more, mostly for typing school papers and Itunes. The memory upgrade wasn't very expensive, $50 or so and EASY to do.

Dell 2007 here too. I dont have vista though, I didnt like it.

now I have replaced memory, video card and have an external drive, but the CPU is still going strong.

I had a Dell Dimension that I thought was about 4 years old. It started running slow and having problems running some of the new software we got last year. As I was cleaning out the desk I ran across the sale slip for it. It was 8 years old! It still ran great for normal things like email, and internet, just couldnt run some newer games well. I still have it hooked up for back up. I got a Lenovo to replace it. It is GREAT!

Knocking on wood here, too. Ours is a Dell inspiron 531. I ~think~ its 4 or 5 years old. Runs a lot slower than 'work' computers, but its fine for what we need at home. :thumbsup2

So far , I've got you all beat. I am sitting here DIS'ing on a Sony Vaio that we bought in 2001! lol! we format it once a year, and it still runs like a champ, original hard drive, original everything! We do plan to buy a new one after the first of the year, just cause we need something with a much bigger hard drive. faster processor, more up to date video cards, etc..but believe me..Sony is the first one we are going to check out! and like another poster..I am knocking on wood as I type this..lol!

Mine are all custom made so we are able to upgrade fairly easily but without upgrades my last one went about 5ish years and it was getting sluggish but was still fully functional. DH won a decent sum on a lottery ticket so we used the funds to upgrade/rebuild then..otherwise I think we probably could have gone a year or two more I think.

This one was built in 2009 and I am guessing we will not need to upgrade again for a while.

Depends on what you mean by "last"
The first went a good ways about 4 ways, before the hard drive and processor started going. The next one a laptop, it lasted about years mechanically but it was obsolete program wise a couple years before that. It couldnt handle any of the new programs I wanted to put on it.

I am typing on a desk top(Dell) that my friend passed down to me, it's a 2002 version. It replaced my last computer (HP) that I had since 2003 and it finally died after Hurricane Irene. It replaced the computer that my former FIL had made for me, which I had for about 3 years that was destroyed by Hurricane Isabel.

Plan on getting a laptop in February, hook up wi-fi(I have decided to embrace technology, lol)

I have a 10 year old Dell that's our second PC. Works fine but I added memory to it. If you want to extend the life a Vista PC then add memory and replace Vista with Window 7.

I have a 7 year old HP that still works. My son has to clean it up every now and then, but other than running a little slower than it used to, it's a great computer!

We had our Dell desktop for 6 years. It became very slow, so we replaced it.

The computer dh uses at work (public school teacher) is from 2003. It's soooooo slow and drives him crazy.

I'm sitting here on a 6 year old home-built PC. It's snappy enough, and I dropped in a new graphics card about 3 years ago (Hmmm... I guess that's not really new any more is it?) but it's pretty obsolete for any sort of newer applications or games. Darn it, no Skyrim for me. It's still running fine, though.

IBM used for 11 years of use, never broke.
Compaq, 14 years of use, never broke.
Gateway 7 years, did not find out why it broke.
HP, 13 years of use, power supply broke.
HP, 3 years and still in use.
HP, 1 year and still in use.

Our last two were 7 years old. We just got a new one, because the other one was starting to have trouble with some programs and looked like the drive was having trouble. We still have it and will dispose of it when we are convinced there is nothing left on it that we need.

This Dell is 4 years old.

The Dell I have all my financial records on I bought in 1999 and runs Windows 98 SE. Later versions of Windows do not run the financial software I like.

My son works in computer IT and one of their clients is running a network on Windows 3.1 with computers they purchased in 1994......and they have no plans to upgrade because newer computers and software wouldn't be an improvement and only an expense.

I still using the same desktop PC I build in 1998. It runs with a Pentium III processor with 768 MB of ram. It's a tower case so I have 4 harddrives; range from 20 GB to 60 GB. It also have 2 DVD writer; one for playing region 1 DVD and one for region 3 DVD so I can watch foreign DVD. It is running with NT 4.0 on primary partition. I also have Windows 95 and Windows XP install as well so I can boot up to any OS at will. I mostly use it for MS Office and surfing. Never add any extra like anti-virus.
