How long did you research/think about DVC before buying?

We actually ended up taking the tour once in 1992 and 1993. We ended up buying in 1994. Of course after spending all the money two years in a row we should have jumped on it back in 1992. We would have had 1/3 of it paid off with the two vacations.

We have never looked back on our decision. Lots of great memorable vacations.

I should start by saying that I never got to go on a vacation as a kid, and I had never been to WDW prior to my honeymoon. It was always a dream of mine as a kid, but because I grew up dirt poor and in a single parent family, I didn't really think it would ever be a reality.

Then, I met my husband.:lovestruc It was actually his idea to take me to WDW for our honeymoon, so I actually blame all of this on him.:rotfl: I fell in love with the place from the moment we arrived. Then, it became a dream of mine to be able to take my own kids at least once (yeah, right!). Fast forward 19 years, and we've gone more times than I can count. We've been very blessed. However, we didn't buy in to DVC until last year.

We had listened to the whole DVC presentation before on previous DCL cruises, and the rep on one cruise in particular had pretty much asked me to get my husband out of her tiny office. He had tough questions, and he was a hard sale. She wasn't getting anywhere fast with him, so she thanked us for coming and pretty much begged us to forget about DVC.:lmao: Our last DCL cruise was different though. I talked my DH in to attending the presentation again because the weather was cold (we were in Alaska), it was a sea day, and what would it hurt, right?:rolleyes1 I think he finally got it. He actually agreed that maybe it was time to buy in. So, I stalked EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the ship who had on a white DVC ball cap, and I wanted to know their real thoughts on owning DVC. Surprisingly, my DH and I couldn't find someone who regretted their purchase no matter how long they had owned. We discussed it some more, set up a meeting with our sales rep, and signed on the dotted lines the next day. We weren't very educated though, so I should admit that up front.

After coming home, I learned about resale. I still don't know if I would have done it differently had I been more informed. We actually bought in thinking we could use our points to cruise, visit other places, etc., and because I was pretty uneducated, I've now learned that it may not be as cost effective and easy as they made it sound onboard the ship. No matter what, I made a decision, and so far I'm happy with it. We have another DCL booked for next year, and I could have used some points for it or I could have rented points to help pay for the cruise, but I'm kind of a point snob. I want all of my points for myself--they are my guarantee that we're going somewhere, so I'm not letting them go unless I'm using them.:rotfl2: It's kind of like my Disney Visa. It's a guarantee that I'm going back--afterall, I have to use my rewards points, right?

I had a relative leave me with money after his death. He was very generous and was always calling me to find out about our next big vacation. I was able to use his money to pay off all of our debt and buy in to DVC. I did it so I could pay it forward with friends and family. We are taking my mother and all of my sisters and their families in July, and we can't wait. I took all of them on a DCL cruise last year before I owned DVC, and my sisters just cried. For a couple of them, they would have never been able to enjoy such a thing with their children had my husband and I not taken them. I hope to some day enjoy WDW and other DVC locations with my kids and their families as well. I look forward to enjoying many more wonderful years of vacationing with the people I love.:grouphug:

Thank you!:thumbsup2 Now that we are all grown, we're taking full advantage of traveling together as a family and making up for all of the years when it wasn't possible. I wouldn't trade our trips for anything!

With some number crunching, it seems that most people break even at the 7-10 year mark, but beyond that, I think the key factor for us is the standard of the accommodation. We'd only stayed at moderates (CB & POR) previously and we enjoyed it, but staying at SSR was a cut above. You get a better standard of accommodation and amenities for less.

We first looked into buying DVC starting in January. Then I started reading everything I could on these DVC boards and this past Thursday we made an offer on a contract and the seller accepted. So we thought about it for about 2 months.

We weren't planning on buying THIS FAST because DH had JUST BOUGHT a Harley motorcycle, but when I got the email from the DVC resale place about a 150 point contract at OKW for Sept user year that was "reduced" and was fully loaded with 3 years of points on it. I freaked out and told DH we HAVE TO GET THIS ONE!!

We haven't even been sent off for ROFR yet so nothing is set in stone. The seller could change their mind or Disney could decide to buy the contract themselves.

It took me about 20 years. I know crazy, I had been to Disney many times on vacation with friends/boyfriend when I first learned of DVC. Everyone I talked to said I was crazy I was single no kids. I went back every few years took the tour 2x. Then 6 years ago I became a single mom to twin girls, we have been to Disney 5 times with plans to go this summer and again for the marathon. I decided It was time after staying in the value resort for the first time with little ones. It just felt cramped. I know it took me a long time to decide but I'm very happy I did.

:cheer2: me :shamrock::shamrock: my girls

We knew we wanted to buy a good 5 years prior to taking the plunge. When we bought in 2006, I was afraid of going resale, so we bought directly, then added on when AKV went on sale, then added on prior to the changes. If we could have afforded it 5 years prior, then we would have bought in earlier. The longer you wait, it seems the more expensive it gets (direct, not resale!)

We first heard about DVC in 2000 on our honeymoon. We liked the idea but we had just bought a house and knew the time wasn't right. Fast forward 7 years and 2 kids...we went with friends and stayed at OKW in October 2007. We were completely sold on the convienence of everything and how much easier it was to vacation with kids. So I spent the next 8 months researching and following these boards and we bought in June 2008 at SSR. No regrets! And the addonitis bug has bitten us since my school system has gone to a year round calendar, so I'm now shopping for a BWV resale for October F&W trips.

Read about DVC week before a trip, took the tour while there and bought.

it took about 6 months...we stayed @ a value our first trip...took the tour...went home without buying and then...waited until the new year to make that awwwesome purchase...

It took us about 3 years. We first took the tour during my first trip to Disney in the summer of 2009. At the time there was a requirement to buy 160 points if you went direct through Disney and we simply couldn't afford that starting a new family. We looked into resale and almost bought last summer 2011, however decided to hold off for a little while. We then followed up with a tour in November of 2011, and found out that we could start out with as little as 50 points at SSR. That was affordable to us, so we bought in direct and will probably add on some more points here in a couple of weeks. Since 2009 we took 2 Disney trips and stayed in value resorts. It was getting tight for our family of 4 and decided that it's time to upgrade.

9 months. We went to their shpeel one August, crunched numbers, talked about it a lot, went back with questions the following May with questions about buying resale, went home to crunch some more numbers (because of the incentives they had at that time) and bit the bullet!! Best tasting bullet ever!

We had been going to WDW every year starting in 1988 and staying on property usually at one of the new resorts. We were staying at Port Orleans in 1990 and asked about what they were building next door and was told about Vacation Club. In 1993 we stayed at what is now OKW for cash and really liked the studio we were in. In 1994 staying at the new Wilderness Lodge we found a voucher in our room for $50 dining credit just for taking the tour. We took the tour and purchased 210 points and have added 165 more points since then. :)

I was a little under 2 weeks.
Don't look at it as impulse, it is know what you want and get it.
And congrats on your new family fun.
Welcome Home.

we would go to WDW every year with free dinning and was great but last year Disney moved us to old key west and wow how nice so much more room for everyone and way more to do so we went again with free dinning and this year and it just was not the same so hubby and i really started to look into dvc and after about 3 mons of reading every thing we could about it we made a offer and they said yes so far it has been a easy thing and are very happy that we are buying dvc:cloud9: also a big part of way we think dvc is better for us as we have older kids in high school and not a fan of always going at free dinning time so now we can go any time :rotfl:

1 wk for us. Got back from WDW using SIL's points. SIL wasn't interested in selling even though they hardly use the points. I did the math on how much we spent in 2011 for rooms at BCV & BWV. Even with some stays at the 40% AP discount, buying DVC resale still comes out cheaper. Made an offer last week, waiting for ROFR.

oh i agree completely, was a wonderful vacation and knew i wanted to spend a week+ there every year:cool1:

Back in 2005, it took us 3 years with 2 very expensive stays @ BCV to want to buy into Disney time shares but NOW so happpy with our decision! Owners @ BCV & VGC
(Southern California locals) which makes weekend trips @ VGC even better!! We love how you can choose where, what & when of your stay! We now think we would have done this years ago when are kids were much younger but sadly could not afford this luxury back then. Having a choice of spacious accomadations & meal planning wiith a limited budget (having use of full kitchens) along side some disney perks (being ON or VERY near park property) is what TOTALLY SOLD us on DVC!! We recently will be going to Aulani using just the points we already own and have had LONG weekend stays in the grand villa @ VGC with extended family so its given us wonderful family vacations we never thought possible! NO REGRETS here only happiness!!
