How long did it take you and your partner to conceive?

I know this is a very personal question, but I was wondering how long it took you and your partner to conceive once you decided to start a family. My husband and I have been trying and it’s taking longer than I thought (hoped) it would (although I probably had unrealistic expectations!). I know that every situation is different, but I’m wondering if there is any kind of an “average”.
Thanks in advance.

We were age 30 when we first started trying. It took three months.
Second child two years later, conceived in less than two months. We were shocked and lucky.

I hope you guys have luck this month! Pixies for you.

It took 6 months for my first child (in my 20s) and a little over a year for my second child (in my 30s)

7 years on our own.

We ended up using one cycle of Clomid and viola....baby :thumbsup2

I am firmly convinced that if I had read Taking Charge of Your Fertility we would have been able to conceive on our own. I recommend it to everyone TTC.

I'm sorry it's taking so long for you...I imagine that it must be really difficult, frustrating, and emotional. Hang in there, it does eventually happen for the majority of couples within the first year.

My first pregnancy was unplanned (failed birth control), but both my second and third pregnancies were conceived the first month trying. My second pregnancy, though, ended in a miscarriage at 6 weeks

We tried for a year on our own and then started the medical infertitlity route. One year after that I was pregnant (so 2 years total). Tried to have a second and the doctors couldn't make it happen again so our second child joined the family through adoption.

My TTC story:

Went off BCP April 2005 (age 28). Tried on our own for over a year. Took Clomid for 5 months. Ended up with a Clomid/IUI June 2007 and my son was born Feb 2008.

My DH and I both had all the tests done and was diagnosed with "unexplained infertility" as all our test were normal.

It can take time or not...it just depends. If you are starting to worry about it there are lots of websites that can give you info on "home remedies" that may or may not work for you. You can also talk to your Dr.

Best of luck to you and lots of Baby Dust :wizard:

Even with using Taking Charge of your Fertility as well as charting and temping, it took a year to get pregnant the first time. I was 32 when we started trying.

It took us one month once I used that book!! 3 months before I finally started charting for realz...

Our friends tried for over a year and got pregnant about 3 months once they used TCYF, but they miscarried.

EVERYONE is different, but after a year of trying, you should see your Dr...it's amazing just how hard it can be to get preggers after spending so many years thinking you had to try so hard to avoid it.

First pregnancy took 2 months to conceive but lost it at 6 weeks. Second pregnancy took 2 months too. With both I was charting my temps using the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. HIGHLY recommend that book.

It turned out that I was ovulating at a completely different time than I thought. Like a week later.

I was 35, DH was 33.

Three years for my first and a little over three years with my second. I was nearing 30 and trying for quite a while so we made an appointment with a fertility doctor. At the appointment the doctor said my uterus was enlarged. The next day he called personally and said he had the magic touch, I was pregnant!

Hang in there but do be proactive.

I agree with the poster that said to get and read, Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Excellent resources and information.:thumbsup2

With the first, it took 3 months; with the second, it took 2 months.

My dd26 and her husband are trying to start a family, and have been trying for over a year, and she is still not pregnant. She has indometriosis (sp???), so that may make it more difficult to conceive. But I'm still hoping!!! I wanna be a Grandma!

Definitely read Taking Charge of Your Fertility - it is a great resource.

DH and I tried for over a year with no results. A friend of mine had also been trying and then got pregnant when working with a Reproductive Endocronologist. For some reason I was really resistant to seeing the RE but I was desperate so I made the appt. Working with the RE I got pregnant on my 2nd Clomid/IUI cycle. It was so worth it. I also loved all the early Ultrasounds and monitoring you get once you conceive. When I was 12 weeks pregnant my RE turned me over to the OBGYN and I was shocked by the difference. The RE's office totally spoiled me. At the OBGYN I was just another pregnant lady. :rotfl:

I am sorry it is taking you so long. That must be so hard. I guess I skew the average towards soon. DH and I were 23 when we got married. We knew we wanted kids young so we decided to just not activly try to prevent pregnancy after we got married figuring it takes most couples 6 months to a year to conceive. DD was due 9 months from our wedding day:lmao: I got pregnant with DS the week DD stopped nursing (not that I would ever suggest usign nursing as birth control--though it seems to have acted taht way for us). I always feel terrible for all of you who have to really work at getting pregnant:hug:Best of luck to you.

I totally agree w/ all the PP who suggested Taking Charge of Your Fertility!

Also, make sure if you don't get pg within a year (6 mos sometimes if you are 35 or older), to have your ob check your thyroid before you go to an RE/fertility dr. Thyroid problems cause a lot of problems w/ getting pg.

My oldest DS was an accident (pill issue)...my second DS took 4 yrs of ttc. DH and I both have issues, so we consider both our boys miracles.

GL and hopefully you'll be pg really sooon...

I charted and it took 5 months to get pg, but the one that took was month 7. We have DD now who just turned 2. Holy cow!

1 month on the first one. 3 weeks on the second.

Swear to heaven above...The wife got a little gun shy after the second one.

2 years with #1, 6 1/2 years with number 2. We did conceive a few times in those years, but I tend to miscarry at weeks 5-6. We never did fertility treatments (just our personal beliefs for our family), but did finally find a doctor who was willing to put me on progesterone to stop early miscarriages. After progesterone....I was pg in one month!!:goodvibes

I read the Taking Charge of Your Fertility book since my mother had some fertility issues. I went off the pill in February. We were planning to start trying in the July/August time frame, so I figured that was plenty of time to have a couple natural periods and also to get my charting down.

Well, come June and I still didn't get my period, just a little spotting. Towards the end of June (in Disney no less) my chart started to show ovulation for the first time since I went off the pill. I wasn't that concerned since I hadn't had a period yet and we weren't using any other protection. Well, bam, I got pregnant right away. I am pretty certain that was the first time I ovulated since going off the pill. I continued to chart and follow the signs and I knew I was pregnant long before the test confirmed.

We weren't upset or anything, just a little shocked and mentally unprepared that it happened so fast. It took my husband quite a few weeks to believe it. It was also very difficult to get through the doctors heads when the baby was conceived since I didn't have a prior period.

That book is the best! I have let several friends borrow it and they have all gotten pregnant very very quickly (if they follow the technique).
