I got to wait at least a week, I hate starting over, if its a good book, I feel like I lost some old friends

It depends. I usually start a new book shortly after finishing one but it takes me a while to finish a book sometimes. I've been reading the one I am on now for a couple months. I'm actually reading two books but one more than the other.

I definitely know what you mean about the feeling of losing old friends.

Reading is an addiction for me, so I have to start the next book as soon as I finish the last; however yes, once I finish a book I honestly do feel as if I've lost some good friends. I'm feeling particularly sad as I've just finished a wonderful book last night: Dirk, Hetty, William, Mary, Theodore, Sarah, Gorham, Salvatore, and especially Charlie....and all the rest...I miss you terribly! It's odd how attached I can become to fictional characters. And it's rare that an author is able to create characters that become near and dear to my heart, but the last several authors I've read have managed to do so and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

Minutes. Someone once told me that I'm a bit like an addict when it comes to books. If I don't have my next fix ready and waiting when I finish the book I'm reading, I get a little agitated. I'm happiest when I have a big stack of unread books on my nightstand. :thumbsup2

As I commute 4 hours daily on a train (2 in each direction), I start the next book as soon as I can push the button on my Kindle. There is no down time. But yes, at times it is weird because I'm still trying to shake off the last story line.

me too!! I just finished a book last night and already have a few waiting that I'm wanting to read. The hard part for me is choosing what to read next! Reading is my favorite thing!!! :goodvibes

But I agree. you get so wrapped up in a story, when it ends you're a little sad. You've spent time with the characters and now their story is over.

Usually, I go right on to the next book in my pile the next day, but I do sometimes go into "book mourning" after a particularly good one. - If that happens, I tend to reread an old favorite before I start something completely new.

Another thing that I think buffers it a little for me is having an "upstairs book" and a "downstairs book" going at the same time. (The upstairs book tend to be a novel fluffy enough for reading at bedtime, the downstairs book is more likely to be nonfiction.) Since I rarely finish them both at the same time, it lessens the sting.

I usually start a new book either the same day, or the next day, after finishing one. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. I know what you mean about feeling like losing a friend when you finish one, I feel like that a lot of times myself if I've really gotten into the book. I know I felt like that after finally finishing Stephen King's "Under the Dome", even though it was something like 1100 pages, I still hated to see it come to an end.

This is me as well. I am on the last book of the "Outlander" series and I know I'll be a bit sad when it is over. If the author writes another novel, it won't be out for a few years.

I always have unread books waiting in the wings.

On her website, Gabaldon says she will have the next book ready for publication in 2012 :thumbsup2

I start reading a new book pretty much as soon as I am done with one.

I have been known to have 3 or 4 different books going at the same time, but anymore I don't read much, I do audio-books and I always have one going in my car, when I finish one, I just move down to the next one on my ipod!

I was on vacation last week so I didn't have one going, but first thing Monday morning I will start a new one, I will be on the road for 4 or 5 hours so I will have lots of time to really get into one!

It depends for me, sometimes I go right into another book other times I stop reading for awhile. I always read one book at a time. To me reading is almost like watching a movie.

from one book right to the next.
Sometimes I will wait until the next day if I finished at night or when I have a lot to do.

It really depends on how the book impacts me and if I need time to "absorb" it. If it makes me think and want to discuss it, I won't start a new book as quickly. If it is a "mindless beach read", I can pick up a new book immediately.

Usually, I go right from one book into another unless I finish reading a book late at night. Then, I start a new one the next day. I read about 3 books a week so I always need a supply ready to go.

If it's a really great book, I wait a day. Otherwise, I start the next one immediately. It's worse with the kindle because it's just so easy to pick the next one down on the screen.

I usually have 3 or 4 going at one time. Once, MANY years ago, I was dissatisfied with a cliff-hanger ending to an Allen Drury political novel, so I wrote to him, strongly expressing my dissatisfaction. I got the nicest personal letter back, with an explanation of why the novel ended that way and a promise to send me a copy of his next novel. To my surprise I received an autographed copy of the next novel about 18 months later.

If you like political intrigue, I highly recommend Allen Drury. The subject matter of his early work is now dated (published in early '60's) but he spins a good yarn.
