How is use year decided

When we attended the presentation with the DVC last week he told us that the use year at this time is February. There is absolutely now way the decision will be made to do this before the end of July. We intended to bank this years points and take a really big family vacation next June with all 4 of our kids, mom, and my niece. So will our use year change to March if we don't buy until August or will it still be February? If I understand right we would have to have Feb points banked by the end of July to be able to bank all of them.

If you buy in August you will probably get March. I bought in September 99 and got April. That's as long as that use year has not sold out yet.

The use year Disney is selling at any particular time is simply that month that is about 4 to 5 months before the month of purchase. In Aug, it will likely be March if it is currently Feb. They can also be flexible on use year start, particularly if you want a month closer to the month of purchase although generally you have no reason to do that as use year has no bearing on when you can go, which is any time of year, or when you can make ressies, always 11 months in advance at home resort, 7 at others. Finally, being able to bank as a new purchaser is usually not an issue, as one of the forms they give you to sign and return with the contracts is a banking request form and if you sign and return that, the points will be banked on date of closing regardless of whether that date meets any banking deadlines.

Drusba is right. I think the most confusing part for newbies is the banking and reservations. It sounds confusing now, but once you get started, you will be planning your trips and point use for the next five years! We like to plan out possible point usage for years in advance when we have lots of time on our hands.

We prefer having a use year shortly before we normally go to WDW. Our thinking was, that if for some reason we had to cancel a scheduled trip, we would still have plenty of time to reschedule, or bank our points. We were originally offered June (July?) use year, but when I said that we would prefer October, our guide was able to make the change for us.
