How is the best way to change an 11 month reservation to use non home resort points?

At 11 months I booked a week in HHI for me and girlfriends. I didn’t know if it would be available at 7 months so I used most of my 2022 points and a few borrowed. It’s still available, and August will be the 7 month booking time.

Do I have to cancel if still available ? Or does modifying open up a chance to start over with points? I am thinking I will add a night.

We live in NJ/PA, and thought it would be nice to get together with friends before the weather at home got so nice that everyone would be making plans with their own families. That’s one part of retirement that I hadn’t anticipated, just how difficult it would be to get friends together! We’ve already had one “drop out” for March!

If you modify a reservation made during the home resort period, that contract will remain locked. It will allow you to choose a non home resort and will take any banked/borrowed points from that contract for any nights still available before finishing up with the home resort current UY points.

If you want to substitute non home resort, then you have to start new or call MS and they might be able to do it since the nights are there. I have never had luck online with the home resort contract unlocking.

Sometimes, I even have that issue when I modify a trip booked during non home resort time and have had to call MS to swap out points for me.

Ok...it’s really only important if we decide we want to be in HHI during July. If not, then I did book what I wanted at 11 months. Home resort for HHI is important in July!

The only way that I know to do it is to make a new reservation at 7 months, which you can do using your non-home resort points. Then turn around and cancel the one you'd made at 11 months. I've never had any trouble having 2 reservations at the same time (even if, for you, it's only for a few minutes). Would it help to put the 7 month reservation in someone else's name who'll be there?

Just remember that the borrowed points don't get returned so you, depending on how many borrowed points you used and the use year, you might want to leave that # of points remaining, if you can...
