Just jump in and ask away:thumbsup2 Anyhow you will most likely find it to be extremely hot and sticky in august, BUT you may find a good trade off if the crowds aren't too bad. We have never been at exactly this time but we have been during Labor Day week a couple of times. You may find yourself on the verge of a trip with a hurricane looming. Don't stress too much on this, because it can often lower park attendance to the point that you feel like you have the WORLD at your fingertips:cool1: Just make sure you have clothes and shoes that are comfortable during high humidity and BRING your own rain ponchos for those quick thunderstorms that are prevalent to Florida that time of year. Would not turn away from this time but rather be prepared and you may get a SPECIAL treat, feeling like the crowd level is so low:cool1:

We were there when Ophelia was just off the Florida Coast and we barely had any showers. That is the ONLY time we have been when they told us If we wanted to "Go Again" on some rides, just remain seated. It was Awesome and we would sign up for that trip everytime if it was guaranteed.:cool1: You could literally walk on and off about anything you wanted.

i've been there the week containing august 19 a couple of times, and it is HOT (upper 80s/lower 90s). and HUMID. just be prepared for that. technically, you are still going in a summer month! bring plenty of sunscreen and a water bottle!

there is a remote chance of running into a hurricane...we were there the night Charley rolled thru Orlando in 2004. since you are in central florida, the damage usually doesn't directly affect you (as a tourist). but given the recent history, it's probably something to keep in the back of your mind as you pack.

Hi!

We've been twice, both times in August. It's hot. Hot, hotter, hottest. We live in a state where it's hot and humid in the summer, but IMHO there's hot and humid and there's Orlando hot and humid. Hot like a thing that has a life of its own, that's how hot.

But as you can see from our sig, we're back for more this August! :rotfl2: It's definitely manageable as long as you take standard heat precautions (chief among them is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, both before and during your vacation) and take a rest break in the peak of the day's heat (the afternoon). Don't let it stop you from having a great time! :thumbsup2

We go in the 3rd week of August, or at least we have the past 2 yrs and are trying again this year! Just be very, very careful and keep hydrated. Carry water bottles with you, even into outdoor shows. We began our day at MGM last year seeing the Lights, Motors, Action! Show (like 10am.) We got seated early, and dd(turning 4) started getting really clammy and lethargic, laying across dh and not really talking to us. It was scary! I got a CM, and asked if there was any way I could run out to the stroller to get a water bottle for her and bring it back in. He said no, there was no way to get out and then back in to the same spot. Then he came over, looked at dd, and offered to call EMS. She looked terrible. DH ended up taking her out of the show, ducking into an a/c shop while I kept the rest of the family in the show. We met up afterward. DD had drained TWO bottles of water in that hour! And looked much better.

So don't underestimate, and don't wait till you feel hot/thirsty/etc... take breaks, rest in shade whenever you can, etc.

Oh, and one of our August trips was like a record-breaking heat wave for those dates in Orlando-- the heat index was about 106 in the SHADE. Here where I live, we hit 100 degrees with very high humidity sometimes, but we don't spend the days outside in it!!!

As for walk-on rides, never experienced that in August. We don't even do the BIG attractions, just the little and medium ones -- and the rides are not walk-on. But the lines are NOT as bad as Easter Week (we'd rather have the heat than the Easter crowds!)

I would head back in August in a heartbeat. Yes, it is hot but managable. We would either start out early or sleep in a little and take advantage of the extra magic hours. EMH may be crowded in the begining but as the night goes on the crowds thin out and you feel like you have the park to yourself.
We also liked to stop mid day for a lunch/dinner usually at a buffet. Have a plan if it starts to rain such as a water ride or an indoor activity. Most of the time we found that the rain ended quickly or we would head to another area of the park where it wasn't raining. One of the best parts of going in August is verry little packing--couple of pairs of shorts, a few T's, a pair of flip flops and your done.;) I was really hoping to head down this August before our oldest leaves for college but it doesn't look like it's going to work with our kids crazy schedules.:confused3 Good luck with your planning.

HOT,HOT, HOT super HOT! We've gone in August before and are going in August this year b/c of scheduling issues. I personally would prefer a cooler month, though. We go more toward the beginning of the month and it still seems pretty crowded.

Been three times in August and going again this year. It is hotter than hot but as other posters have said... just drink LOTS of water. I plan on at least two sets of clothes for each day. I also don't spend a lot of time primping on the August trips.... any makeup/ hair is shot in the humidity and heat.

I've also been during the past two free dining periods, the third week in August each time and it was a lot more crowded last year than the year before. We are going the week before it starts this year, don't know how the crowds will be but it definately was not "walk on the rides" when we were there.

Make all the TS reservations you want NOW!!!! You will find it is difficult if not impossible to get the popular ones if you wait until you get there. You can call Disney Dining each morning and see what is available but if there is a must do for you... make ADRS now!!!!!!

Hope you have a fun trip!

Went last year during the time that you are talking about and while it was hot, it was doable as others have said. Just use your head and remember to drink LOTS of WATER!!!! Soda and aloholic drinks do not do what water does! Wear hats with visors, light colored and light weight clothes. Take breaks in the afternoon from about 1 until 4 or 5. Go back to the resort, take a nap, if you are one of the lucky ones that can sleep during the day, go to the pool. Use alot of Sunsrean with a high PF factor.

We will be back this August at about the same time as you are. In fact, in the same resort!!!!! We are there from the 23rd to the 31st. Just look for a tall blonde grandmother, carrying a lime green lunch bag, with two DGDs, and a really tall fella with a really, really, short dark haired girl..my son and daughter in law! They look like Mutt and Jeff!!!:rotfl:

Last year we were in Disney from September 3 through 10. I have never been more uncomfortable in my life due to heat/humidity. It was disgustingly hot. The nice thing about that time of year, thankfully, is that there were almost no lines all week for any rides or shows.

I basically started sweating the moment we got off theplane in Orlando and did not stop until we got on the plane a week later. I had never before in my life had such a problem with heat/humidity (I had always preferred extreme heat to extreme cold). Our 1 year old seemed to have a tough time with it also... she was sweating a lot also, and when I would hold her we both seemed to warm each other up that much more.

Bring a LOT of water with you (have it shipped for free to your hotel from staples!). Also, expect to stop in the gift shops frequently for a break. You may find you spend a lot more in the gift shops this way than you otherwise would have, but at least you can be comfortable. The pools at the hotel (we were at Coronado Springs) definitely felt great mid-day. Also, it is worth pointing out that Disney really cranks the air conditioning of the indoor areas. My 4 year was funny... she kept saying she was hot and then as soon as we would walk inside she would say she was cold. The cold air inside felt like Heaven to me!

Anyway, having said how uncomfortable I was last year (and I remember thinking I would not want to visit that same time of year again), we have booked another trip for this coming year, this time from August 29 to Sept 4. So yes, I expect to be insanely hot again, I expect to duck into the gift shops for a break from the heat a lot again, I expect to drink a LOT of water again, and I expect to get a lot of use of the pool again (this time at the Polynesian).

Am I crazy? Possibly. The heat was really the ONLY thing that was not perfect last year. We had SO much fun. Actually, one other thing wasn't perfect... we were on the bus to MK one evening when the driver slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a car that cut the bus off... my DD4 went flying off the seat and slammed her head into the guard rail in front of her. Thank God I had been holding onto our DD1 tightly, or who knows where she would have ended up. A woman on the back of the bus ended up in the aisle towards the front of the bus. Thankfully, other than a little bump on the head and a BIG scare, my DD4 was ok.

Just keep asking questions especially in the different forums.

Have a great trip!

Hi, we were there last August with the Free DDP, it was anywhere from 85 to 95 degrees everyday. The nights were better, only in the mid 70's. Remember, it's not the heat, it's the humidity that gets you. Just drink lots of water and stay out of the mid afternoon sun, go swimming or take a nap between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. it makes life so much more enjoyable.

A tip; change your shoes and socks everyday when you take a break, it's much better on your feet and you can go all night then.:cool1: :cloud9:

I went the last week of August this past year and it was 92-93 each day and VERY HUMID! I personally won't go back again during that time as I don't do well in the heat, lol. I can become quite witchy because I tend to SWEAT something fierce. I will say that our group of 8 (5A and 3C) all needed to wear at least 2 outfits per day too due to the weather.

Good luck!

Missie :)

Welcome to the DIS! :surfweb: You'll soon be hooked just like all the rest of us :rotfl:

Just to give you an idea from August 22- 27 last year (which of course doesn't mean anything for this year - they're just weather statistics but shows trends) the Orlando Sentinel weather archives show:

August 22, 2006 Max temp 93 degrees, max humidity 100% (Thunderstorm)
August 23, 2006 Max temp 94 degrees, max humidity 100% (Rain,Thunder)
August 24, 2006 Max temp 93 degrees, max humidity 100% (Rain,Thunder)
August 25, 2006 Max temp 87 degrees, max humidity 100% (Rain,Thunder)
August 26, 2006 Max temp 90 degrees, max humidity 100% (Rain,Thunder)
August 27, 2006 Max temp 92 degrees, max humidity 100% (Thunderstorm)

Welcome to Florida in the summertime! :goodvibes

Like everybody says just take it easy, drink lots of water, and if you need an afternoon break head back to the room or pool and relax. Remember the sunscreen too - even the tops of your feet if you're wearing sandals. :cool2:

We have gone in August for the past few years and we love it! We are going back this summer. We lke going then and we get to take advantage of the free dining. I don't think it isd as humid as home (MA) and I really don't seem to have too much trouble with the weather. The crowds aren't bad when we are their either, so it is a good time to go.

We'll be at the ASMu from Aug 15 thru 24 ! We love going in Aug. Yes. it's hot, but no hotter than it is here (20 miles north of Boston) in the summer. We spend a week camping in Maine just prior to coming to Disney, and it's always hot. Gets us in the right frame of mind ! We have a 15 yo son and a 10 yo daughter. It'll be our 4th trip. We can't wait ! You'll have a great time ! Good luck !!:thumbsup2

We went in Aug. 04 and 06. Definitely hot and humid but if you take a break in the heat of the day (we went swimming) and come back in the evening, it works.
We all wore 2 outfits a day. And it was nice to sit down at TS for dinner and relax and soak up the air conditioning. (not to mention try the awesome food during free dining).
We did notice it was more crowded last August with the free dining being offered.
We're going in June this year because of DD's cheerleading:cheer2: schedule. Otherwise, we'd probably go back in August.
