OK, so in the vein of the "big picture" threads people have been posting, recently.

How has WDW (or DL) changed your life?

For me, it's an easy question. When we were down in March, the last day we were there was the day of the Princess Half Marathon. All the women walking around MK and EPCOT with their medals were so very awesome,, to me. I thought to myself that maybe, maybe I could do something like that someday. I'm pretty much one of the least athletic people on the planet, always came in last in school races, and struggle with a muscle and eye disorder that makes a lot of sports very hard for me.

When we got back home to New York, I bought a pair of running shoes, the Couch to 10k app for the iPhone, and began training every day. A lot of days SUCKED at the beginning, but I just kept picturing running alongside Mickey and Minnie, and I kept going.

Two months later, I ran my first 10k. Convinced that this meant I was doing well, I plunked down the money for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon in October.

It has been a long road since then. Lots of training runs in 87 degree weather with 80 percent humidity, a few races where I was sure I wasn't ever going to be ready for Wine & Dine, that I was wasting thousands of dollars to watch other people run. Lots of runs cut short by pure laziness, and lots of sacrifice in the "food and beverage" department.

On Monday, I'm going to run 9 miles for the first time, and nine weeks from TONIGHT, I'll be running through DAK, DHS, and EPCOT, ending up in front of Spaceship Earth, the first attraction I ever rode at WDW when I was two and a half years old.

Your turn.

It did give me a place to spend large sums of cash, all in one neat package. Until WDW I had to go to many different locals to spend that much money in such a short time. :thumbsup2

First of all : CONGRATULATIONS you've already made a great accomplishment before the race begins!!

2nd Your cat looks like my departed, beloved and never to be forgotten NORMAN- same black helmet on the head LOL:cloud9:

3rd- I've spent enough money for one full year at a private college somewhere
OR
I've spent enough to but 2 new cars
OR I've spent enough to buy ONE new car, new carpeting for the house and a great deck around my pool.

but ... NO... I choose to go to WDW ............... no regrets:thumbsup2

My husband and I swore we were not having kids. On our 12th anniversary we planned a trip to Disney in the spring. We saw so many cute little families with kids and it affected us that trip. Awwwlll lets have a baby I said to hubby. I came home with our souvenir as the commmercial goes ;)

The boardwalk villas hold a special place in our hearts. :rotfl:

DisneyWorld has changed my life because it has :worship: TAKEN OVER MY LIFE.

I am an obsessed plannner now that dining is 180 days out that has taken 1/2 a year of my life to sit on this computer on these boards(love em) my husband loves Disney too, but thinks I am nuts  He said every time he walks in I am on here.

Thats ok, because I have a friend who is just an crazy if not crazier than I am, that is how we became such good friends.(Luv:love: ya Renee)

It is all fun, family time that I cannot seem to get the same satisfaction from anyother vacation destitation. I will go here as long as I can, planning an adult Disney w/ friends  as soon as our kids are old enough to be home alone.

Not really life changing, but great just the same
It is the one place I feel I can go and just shut down. I still carry my phone, so I am not completely disconnected.
It gives me a place where I know my family is going to have a great time, and we expect the service to be top notch. It's expensive, but I can stop worrying as soon as we drop our bags at the southwest ticket counter.
The trips also create great conversations, where everyone is engaged.

Disney World didn't so much change my life as it became my life, or at least a substantial portion of it.

My Mom first took me to WDW for my 7th birthday. So, technically I was six when I went, seven when I left. I would never be the same.

Even at that young age, I knew I had found a love of my life. Oh sure, most all little kids love Disney, but I think I loved it just a little bit more than average. After we got back home, my every thought revolved around how we were going to get back. I started saving my allowance (all $2 a week of it ! ) and while other kids were reading comic books, I was trying to read travel logs and guidebooks and anything that involved planning a vacation to "the world". (If only the Internet had existed ! ) I knew I was too young to really do anything about actually going, but I wanted to be prepared if anything came along. :goodvibes

As I got older, my affection for Disney expanded even more. I started to get an true appreciation for the animation in films, and the designs in the park. Everything from the window treatments in the buildings on Main Street USA to all the special effects in rides like the Haunted Mansion. It seemed like there were endless avenues to explore. (It still does)

By college age or so I began to get fascinated with, and frustrated by, the corporate business model of The Mouse. The more I learned about business and finance, the more mind-numbing the process became. Learning as much as I could about the Eisner years and the ruthless backstabbing side of the powers that be threatened to drain the magic out of the entire Disney experience. I basically decided to just let it go, to enjoy the parks at the surface, and let the corporate big boys just duke it out without me. ;)

So, that's pretty much where I am today. Has Disney changed my life ? Yeah, just a little. :wizard:

I'm with Brook. Its taken over my life.

I remember as a teen liking Disney and had been do Disneyland a couple of times with my family (on the way to visiting my family in the UK). Then through my teens we always said "when we win the lottery, we'll go to WDW". Well we didn't win the lottery but we did something else, we got jobs ;)

In 1994 (I think or 1996?) I travelled with my Mum, brother, my BF at the time and another friend to WDW. Its all been downhill since then...

We (me, Mum and my DH) made it back in 2001 (DH's first visit) and have been going every 2-3 years to Disney since (DL & WDW). We bought into DVC in 2003 and have also done 3 cruises with DCL.

Our pets have Disney names, I wear Disney clothing daily (even if its just my underwear), have Disney kitchen utensils, plates, Disney bedding, listen to Disney music, wear Disney jewelry... etc

Its a DISease... and I talk about it constantly to anyone that listens ... my workmates find me amusing... I have no friends... :rotfl2:

That's an easy question for me to answer:
I literally met my wife at WDW. To be precise at Old Key West in December 1994. It is a truly magical place.

It has taken over my life-not only is it my "happy place", but it's also where I work.

i did my first race last march the princess half marthon....very empowering.

wdw has ruined live lol I expect ecrything to be disneyfied now. We go to local amusement parks and it just isn't the same. In my mind I am always thinking disney is so much better.....wouldnd't change my love for disney but I do find my standards are now higher lol. Sometimes when we have to deal with customer service i have to remind myself I am not at Disney

First: ROOMTHREESEVENTEEN, your story is inspiring. As a VERY nonathletic person who would love to be able to do something like run a half marathon, it makes me think "well, maybe I could!"
Second: Our first trip to Disney, after which we immediately bought into DVC, really was life changing. Our lives were always work, work, work, short vacations to visit family or a trip (usually disappointing and always expensive) down the Jersey shore. Discovering the magic that is WDW and being able to go on a regular basis as brought such fun into our lives. Fortunately, DH fell in love with it as quickly and as much as I did. Our obsession with all things Disney is a relief from the stresses of everyday life and has made so many wonderful family times possible. It's as if my pre-Disney life was lived in black and white, and now I can live in technicolor. Only other Disney addicts would get it.

We went to WDW in Sept 08 and my wife came home pregnant with identical triplets.. best souvenirs ever! We don't doubt the power of the Disney magic anymore, EVER, and it made our special connection to WDW even stronger. Every aspect of our lives have changed since then.

I lose sleep by staying up too late reading the Dis boards.
No, wait. That is how the DIS has changed my life!

Its made me aim to retire to the WDW area, so I have changed my savings/retirement plans to acheive this

I cannot say that Disney has changed my life but from the age of 7 or 8 Disney has been part of my life. We went to WDW aka MK the first XMAS it was opened or by the next summer at the latest. And we went at least once a year until I was 15. Then visits trailed off as other things in life took priority. Then we had kids and we took them to WDW for the first time. :thumbsup2

We were from Orlando though we had moved away but we still have relatives in town so we always stayed with them. Or MK visits were one day trips.

Now we go a week or more at a time. I figure our kids have spent more days at WDW than I ever did. Miission is mostly accomplished. :lmao:

The kids now have memories of their parents and grandparents. Memories that are priceless. When our kids have kids. And when their kids have kids I hope they go to WDW, walk to the same paths as we did, and remember us.

WDW will not have changed their life but WDW will have become part of their life.

That will be mission accomplished.

Later,
Dan

Amy - I'm with you! I'm training for my first 1/2 marathon because of Disney World (and really because of the DIS!). Whenever I'm struggling with a run, I remember that I'm doing this so I can go to my happy place!
Over the last 2-3 years I went through some really tough personal times (that I'm trying to leave behind) and Disney has been my escape. Planning for trips, going on trips, being in Disney lets me get away from reality for long enough to move forward. I won't call it life-saving but Disney has been a life-preserver during a storm. Thankfully life has moved in better directions for me but I still think of Disney as my place to be happy and just be a kid again!

Amanda
