How hard is it to switch if you're cancelled?

My first ever ABD is booked to Italy and Switzerland in September of this year. I've been following Europe's opening to tourism closely and I think that by late summer/Italy will be good. But, with Switzerland not being part of the EU and the fact they're still closed to Americans, I don't know if this trip will be a go. (I noticed today when I checked rates and dates that this trip has now disappeared until August of '21). I'm really hoping that by then, we'll be allowed to go but if not, I'm hoping to switch to Greece which has very similar dates.I'm an ER nurse and getting time off isn't very easy at this point, and my time off is approved. IF ABD cancelled my current booked trip and Greece is a go, is it super easy to say, "OK, put me in Greece instead?" We're fully vaccinated and I also bought our air through ABD specifically because it's easy to change if the trip is cancelled.
Any information so I can plan a backup is appreciated. Thanks!

I haven't had to make any changes this year (because I had nothing booked in 2021) so I don't know specifically how they are currently handling things. But if they have to cancel your trip, I would imagine if Greece is the alternative that worked for you, and it was going and still had availability, they'd work pretty hard with you to move you to the Greece trip. Back in 2009, when the economy sank and ABD had to do a lot of cancellations, I was in the same situation where they canceled my Canadian Rockies trip, and I couldn't change dates, and the Alaska trip worked for me, as the dates were only off by one day. They totally worked with me, and I got switched to Alaska. HOPEFULLY they are still working that way.

I think they will definitely try to get you on any bookings that are available that they can accomodate with your schedule. When they called and cancelled my ABD china trip they reached out to phone and tried to reschedule a new trip. If you want and are able to go on a new itinerary, asap would be better that would be the best choice that way you don't have any future credit with. I can't remember if you had future credit with them how long you had to use it by. I rather went with the refund 100% back because of international travel uncertainty at the time. This was last year.
