How hard is it go get a cab in Nassau?

I was reading a trip report that was saying that cab drivers would turn a couple down or make them wait for more people to share the ride with. Is this typical?

I was thinking of staying on board for the morning, then in the afternoon taking a cab to the public beach if we feel like it. Is that feasible?

I don't think you will have any problems. I have never seen as many cabs as I did in Nassau...........

While getting a cab is not a problem, they definitely WILL make you wait until it is full. We have waited up to 20 minutes for a cab to fill at the public beach (what ticked me off was that another cab, that had started to fill up after we got in ours, left 10 minutes earlier because the driver didn't wait till it was packed like saradines). It seems to be the luck of the draw. We never disembark in Nassau any more, but if I did, I would make it clear to the driver upfront that he doesn't leave within 5 minutes, I'm getting out of his cab.

Barb, is it rude, if you've been waiting for 10 minutes, to tell the driver to forget it and go with another cab that is read to leave?

I figure it's no more rude than his making me sit in that unairconditioned sweatbox without warning me beforehand!
The driver never told us he was going to wait, and when we noticed that we weren't going anywhere and asked, he brushed us off. Therefore, since he was rude, I wouldn't have any qualms about getting out. If he had told us there would be a wait, we might have chosen to do it standing outside where it would have been more comfortable.
Oh well, I guess that Nassau isn't alone in this...the same thing happens with Mears at MCO!

What did you think of the public beach?

We really want to spend some time at the beach but do not necessarily want to book a room for the day.

We've done Blue Lagoon this summer but would not do it again.

we had no problem getting a cab for 2 people to take us over to atlantis........ or any where else we wanted to go
thought we where going to have to wait but ,,, shut the door and off we went ........ ask up front...................

The public beach is nothing fancy, but it's a good spot to take a dip if you don't want to bother with an excursion or you want to be on your own timeframe. There are no chairs/umbrellas, so bring towels to sit on. Many people use the restrooms in the hotel next door. There are vendors walking around selling drinks, trinkets, etc., but I have never found them to be overly pushy. You can also do parasailing, banana boat rides, and jet skiing. If you do, negotiate a good price and BE CAREFUL...hubby got stranded way out in the ocean on a jet ski that conked out. You can walk along the beach to Atlantis...the beach is all technically "public," even behind the resorts, but of course you can't use their beach chairs. We found out about this beach from one of the cab drivers when we were asking about Blue Lagoon.
