How generous are you?

If a person in front of you was short money for their purchase would you give it to them? I mean, if you had the money to do so and not for a lot of money?

I was at wal-mart last night with dd3. There was an older lady (maybe in her 70s but was wearing a brown wig). We talked and she told me about this necklace she was buying. The lady kinda reminded me of my grandmother. She was sweet

Well when she was rang up, she was .35 short. I gave her the money for it. And it made me feel good to do something for someone. I just love that feeling.

Do you do this?

Sometimes, it depends on the person, and probably what they were buying. For a little old lady, just a little short on something innocent, sure.

For the little old lady getting smokes and a scratch ticket, no.

My Dh and I get compliments pretty often for being generous. We live okay not outlandish or anything, especially on military and education pay..lol. Every month he gives $10 to the Red Cross, we send a monthly donation to St. Jude's Hospital. We always seem to be dumping change in handout barrels and those darn bell ringers in the holidays will be the death of us hahhaha. This past weekend we started our Toys for Tots shopping. Yes I did say start. We have tons of family and buy them a bit of something but they know children are our passion and since we don't have any, we buy tons of toys to donate. I think that we do okay being generous. We talk about how we compensate with more monetary donations then actual time donations but sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day.

Gee, I hope I wasn't a thread killer. Sorry if I am...

Have a great day and it's always good to do something for someone no matter how big or small.

I would without question! I've never seen that happen though.

I'm sorry if I made it sounds like I was tooting the proverbial horn about us. I reread what I wrote and realized that it sounded very snotty.

I didn't see you as snotty. Sometimes it's good to know and acknowledge the good things we do. Most people acknowledge the bad things but seem embarrased by the good things they do.

You and your dh seem like very generous people. My family is also military. Keep it up and brag, maybe others will listen and do good to spread around.

I always see it as the good I do, I hope it comes back to me. You can do good in little things or bigs things. My best joy from it is seeing the others happy. I do Meals for Wheels every week and you should see how happy the senior citizens are to get the meals.

Thank you I appreciate the nice sentiment. We always give because as we say "you never know if you or someone you love will need it." Meals on wheels is a great organization. I did that while in college. I love older people.

Sure--I do that all the time. I really love to do it when I see a little kid counting out their change to buy candy. I tell them to get an extra one on me.

There was this great little girl in front of us at the grocery store last weekend that was buying a rose for her dad for his birthday. It was so cute--he was at another register buying groceries with Mom and she was so afraid he'd see her so DH and I stood in front of her and blocked her from view. She was a quarter short so I forked it over for her! She was adorable--she was so excited, she told me the whole story about why she'd picked pink, etc.

If anyone at the grocery store in front of me is short some change, I give it to them. I just enjoy it more with the kiddos!

Just last night I gave the woman in front of me at Wal-Mart .57 'cause she didn't have enough. I didn't do it looking for anything in return, but she was so grateful, it brought a tear to my eye.

I've also done similar "donations" in situations the OP described. I have to admit, though, that I usually wait to see if the person really doesn't have the money. Once I offered to help, less than 50 cents. The person buying it was polite but let me know she was just looking for change in her person to avoid breaking a larger bill. :)

I had done it before, but no one had done it for me before, except for some store cashiers who would spot me a penny or two that they have at their registars instead of me getting it out of my wallet.

Yes, I have many times - esp when someone is short on money at a register and embarassed by it. I would hope someone would step in and save me at those times if it happens, so I do the same.

I usually don't tell anyone, though.

I do as well ... I also lend money to my coworkers for bus fare which they never seem to have  . I'd hate to see someone stranded though.

I recently read about a local donut shop that had someone who paid for another customer's order at the drive-thru. This person must have been a regular customer because it happened several times :)

I was behind a woman picking up her insulin, needles and test strips..she went to pay wit ha 100.00 bill and they wouldn't take it, they said it was fake...I paid 89.00 for her supplies, gave her my phone number and said if she was going to pay me back to call me and I would come over and get it. She called me the next day, I went to her senior citizen housing and she paid me back and introduced me as her "angel" to all the old people LOL....she was SO upset she had no supplies and needed her insulin...I couldn't see not helping her out.

I used to work in retail and if someone was a little short when I rang them up, I would make up the difference. I always had tons of change in my pockets from the soda machine LOL!

Someone also gave me change once at the grocery store. I was trying to pay and was watching both my nieces and had Remy with me (they were all under 4). I was trying to get my little change purse out while kids practically dangled from my legs (they were also fighting  ) and this nice older man behind me just smiled and handed the cashier the .08 cents. It was really sweet and even though I did have it, it was nice that someone was trying to be helpful.
