How far would you drive?

Would you drive to an airport 4 hours away to save money?

I live in a small town in Virginia. My only flight options are $200 pp in my hometown. $109 pp out of Richmond (2.5 hours from my hometown) or $64 out of Charleston, WV (4 hours from my hometown).

The money savings is so enticing to me and the flight times are good. Wouldn't have to get up too early and wouldn't get home too late.

You didn't say how many people are going on the trip. Obviously, if there are 4 or 5 of you that is a lot of money and I would make the drive. If it is just you it doesn't add to that much of a savings.

If the flight times are good and you don't mind driving, I would drive the 4 hours. Good luck.

Yikes, that's a tough call. We usually fly out of Providence (about an hour door to door) even though we're closer to Boston. We've also driven up to Manchester, which is about 90 minutes in ideal traffic conditions...which we never seem to be in when we're on the way up there LOL! We're only about 20 miles south of Boston, but the prices from Boston never seem to be as cheap as Providence (and we're SW addicts and they're just starting to fly from Boston this weekend), and the parking is incredibly expensive...once we did fly out of Hartford, which was a little over 2 hours away, and we decided that was too far to drive.

We often do it but not solely for the money savings. LAX is a 4 hour drive and we can get direct flights to everywhere from there. Our hometown airport is small and we always have to connect somewhere. So if I can't get a flight from home with a short enough layover, we might as well drive to LAX and take the direct flight and save a few bucks at the same time.

Well, I live an hour from Chicago, but I'm driving 2.5-3 hours to fly out of Indianapolis. On my dates, it saved us $400 total for four people...plus the parking is only $7 a day instead of $14. I'm staying 2 extra nights at Disney for the money I saved! For me, it was less money AND less hassle to fly out of a smaller airport.

Yes. I live in Cleveland Ohio and have driven to Pittsburg, Detroit and Columbus to save money. Last year we looked at flight to Orlando and the price in Cleveland was $235 more per person than flying out of Detroit. So we saved nearly $500.

I would do it if I were you. What do you have to loose.

I would just fly from your home town. You only save $150 per ticket by driving 4 hours away. When you come home the last thing you will want to do is spend another 2.5 - 4 hours in the car.

Book from your home town and see if you can get a ride to the airport from a friend or family member. That way it is much less hassle and you wont waste money on airport parking or gas.

I drove 2 hours once to save $1200 (6 of us flying and it was $200/pp less to fly out of the airport the furthest away). If you're only going to save a couple of hundred dollars I would fly out of the airport closest to you.

We usually drive 3 hours to an airport to get decent fares and more direct flights. Everyone is different; for us, $100 saved on flights means $100 to spend on dining (foodies here).
