How far out should I start looking for rates for a car?

I will be in DW on Jan 14 2004 and right now the prices for a car with any of the on airport rentals are outrageous. Will need a minivan from the 14th to the 22nd and I am partial to National obviously for the Emerald Club and I also have a Quicksilver membership for Alamo and a preferred renter for Avis.

I just want to know what the usual advance time frame is to get a good price if anyone can answer that. I know that if you try to reserve too close to your arrival time you can't get a cheap rate either. Most of the offers out there seem to expire at the end of the year. When can I expect the new offers for next year to start appearing?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Jon

Jon~

For our upcoming trip in September, I made my original reservation in April. I checked the national website regularly to see if prices had dropped in hopes of a better rate. Ultimately, the prices went up, up, up! So I was glad I made the reservation when I did. Just last week the price dropped (for 2 days!) and I was able to modify the reservation.

Hope this helps,

I make mine ASAP and then watch daily to see if it drops any from the rate I have booked.

I booked January for December and it severely dropped in March. I've had the same rate since March of $110 for a Full size including all fees/taxes.
