How far out do you start purchasing gift cards?

Is there a reason why people purchase gift cards instead of putting cash aside? Is there a special benefit using gift cards? Just curious!

We are headed to Disney in August 2014 and I'm putting $100 in cash aside to have for food and such. Just wondering if gift cards would be better.

Lots of places off discount for buying a Gift card. Our example is Giant Eagle local grocery store sells gift cards for every $50 you buy you get .10 to .20 off a gallon of gas which is accumulative up to 30 gallons of gas in a transaction.

Last week we bought $2050 Disney gift cards under the .20 off special, I filled up the van and 3 gas cans (30 gallons) and got $108.00 of gas without paying for the gas just for buying disney gift cards. We still have about 1.5 free fillups of 30 gallons of gas to go. Which basically means in math terms.

For spending the money on gc instead of just putting all money on credit card, we get 270 of free gas or little over 10 percent off price of going to disney because I have to buy gas and normally get it from giant eagle.

That makes sense. Just couldn't figure out why people would be buying random Disney gift cards. We don't have any promotions in my area...at least none that I am aware of at this point!

I just paid off our cruise. We bought 1525.00 in gift cards and paid 1450.00 since we used our red card at target. 75.00 saved is a nice perk :)

I am in the same boat as you. There are no deals on gift cards that I am aware of. Though Winn Dixie does give money off gas for purchases so I might just buy some anyway. I have to pay my room deposit when I book and getting some money off gas at the same time makes sense. I just never thought about it really. I will have to see if they have Disney gift cards available.

Another reason I like to buy Disney gift cards is that I can't spend them on anything but Disney. If I just put the money in my savings account it sometimes gets spent on other things like emergency car repairs, unexpected bills, etc.

Winn Dixie occasionally offers extra fuel perks for buying gift cards, especially right before Christmas. Last year was an extra 10 cents for every $50 you purchased.

I will have to remember that and remember to buy them with the card that pays me 1% back for the purchase!

Just for Disney. ;0)

If you have a Bilo card and your bilo sells the gift cards, that's also a good way to get card and build fuel perks for cheap gas.

My BiLo only sells the$25 Disney gift cards. Does your BiLo sell different denominations? Thanks.

Our boys use a program called "scrip" to help raise money for scouts and band...so I've been stockpiling Disney gift cards for our upcoming trip and getting a small % back that goes towards their trips. Can't wait to check out the target and Winn Dixie deals...
