How far in advance to book

How far in advance can you book your resort? What if the prices change for the cost of the rooms? Do you lock in the price when you book?

I usually book 8-12 months out, I book a room only reservation and wait to see what available. We are going in May and right now we have a AAA rate but we are passholders and are hoping for a passholders discount or pin.

If a good deal comes out we apply it to our present reservation.

How funny that I came across this question. We want to go Oct 24-31, 2011 and I am debating whether I want to book it now or not. I know if you book now and lets say a free dining offer came out, you can apply it toward your reservation, we did that for our last trip.
