How far in advance do they assign rooms?

I know I've seen this answered on the forums but I couldn't find it. I am wondering how far in advance they assign the rooms? We have only one request, to have connecting rooms with my inlaws. Since I have two small kids, I'd like a quieter area (staying at POP then WL) so they can nap and get to bed early. If I request that at the time of check-in, is that too late? We're starting off at POP and won't get in until after 11pm, so I'm thinking the chances of getting anything good are pretty slim! How much will it help that I have a 2 and a 4 year old?

Thanks!

You can request your preferences when you make your reservation. If you didn't do it then, call Disney and request that it be put on your reservation or call POP. Asking for a lakeview room would be a good bet for a quiet room as they do not front onto the more loud pool areas.

Last year we arrived about 8:30 pm and got our preferences. Its not a guarantee but they try.

Thanks for your help! That reminds me of another question re: Pop. If I request a quieter area (standard room) will I end up far away? I have two young kids so I want to be close to the food court and bus stop, but I don't want it to be too noisy. Yes I want the best of both worlds! What is the best area to request for this? Should I request a certain building?

Thank you!
