How far does a hotel have to be before you refuse to walk to DLR from there?

I booked my hotel on GAT before I found Dis and will be staying at the Comfort Inn Maingate (even though the name is QUITE the stretch). Normally, I don't have a problem with long distance, as I do quite a bit of walking every day, but it seems like most of you are real adamant about choosing close hotels.

The Comfort Inn is about 1.2 miles from the park and I don't have a problem with traversing for 20-25 min up Harbor (in fact, I think it would be pleasant). I'm just wondering for the rest of you how far a hotel has to be before you decide it's too far?

Hmmm, I don't know.....we've walked from the Peacock but I really don't know how far away that is.....so I mapquested it and according to mapquest it's 2.35 miles away! WOW not bad! :) So I guess I'll walk from a couple miles away....LOL

For me, I just wouldn't go below Katella or above Ball. I'm a good walker, too. However, after spending 8-12 hours at DL, my feet are TIRED! I think it's the standing that is much harder on your legs and back, rather than brisk walking. So I guess I would be much more concerned with that walk back at the end of the night. We stayed at HoJo last time, and loved it, but I have to say, even though it was only 5 minutes' walk farther up Harbor than Best Western Park Place Inn, ohhh, that stoplight up at Manchester looked soooooo far away, after a long day at the park!

I say, the closer the better. Also because one of Hydroguy's rules is to stay close by so you can take midday breaks. I wouldn't walk 1.2 miles back at noon, and then back AGAIN at 4. And I found my family really needs those midday breaks!

Just my 2c. :)

Last (first) time I went, we got a hotel that was about 16 minutes away, walking. It wasn't too bad, really - we (my friend and I) are young and can hoof it, haha...but we were at DL for 6 days, so the walk seemed to get longer every day...*sigh* Next time we are definitely paying extra to just be closer. We prefer walking because that way we can be on our own schedule, but we can't take a break midday if the hotel is far away...plus, you just get TIRED. Still had a blast, though. Hope that helps! :) :)

We would not walk if our hotel was past Convention Way. It would be about a 15-minute walk from a Convention Way hotel to the DL main gate.

That is us exactly. I love to walk but my pedometer usually has me at about 12 miles a day and we always take a midday break. So adding another two miles to that is just time and steps wasted from my DL fun! If it saved me a lot of money and or got me into something really fabulous that might be different. But with the good rates (I mean the $59 Hojo rate can seldom be surpassed, even off the beaten path) and many nice motels to choose from, I don't have much need to venture far away.

And if we stay until midnight, which we do on weekends, I don't want to be walking a mile or more to get back to my room.

I am a big time walker, walking my kids to preschool in fair weather even though it is over 2 miles each way. But on vacation, that's a little much since I'm not bringing the jogging stroller. I have only been once, and we stayed as close as possible because I wasn't familiar with the distances of other hotels and heard varying reports. Some folks feel certain hotels are extremely far, while others feel those same hotels really aren't that far. After going once and seeing the layout, I am more comfortable staying "farther" from the entrance than we did before. But I had to actually see the hotels and how close/far they are to know my comfort zone. Numbers on Mapquest didn't really do it for me. :goodvibes

we've stayed at the comfort inn maingate before, though we've never walked to DLR from there. we'd probably consider it if we didn't have 4 children to keep track of on that busy road. IDK, by the time we're done trekking around the parks for 10+ hours, i'm usually dead on my feet, with one or more of my kids falling asleep on the tram to the parking lot.

also, the 1.2 miles you are talking about it just to the street entrance. that's not the distance to get to the gates of the parks. you may want to find out how much further that is, because it could be close to an additional mile, seriously. and although that might not be an issue on your way there in the morning, it might REALLY make for a miserable walk back at night.

I'll go check it on Google Earth, to see if I can estimate the distance from the street entrance to the actual gates....

EDITED TO ADD: I just checked it, looks like you're in luck! it doesn't add much distance at all, the walk between the street entrance and the gates to the parks...maybe an additional 5 minutes, if that?

Turning into the entrance from Harbor to the Esplanade is like a tenth of a mile, probably two or three minutes. Luckily this time I'll only be going with friends, so it will just be a bunch of fit strong men strutting through Harbor! :lmao:

Does anyone know how late ART runs on peak season? If it goes till closing, I might take that unless we head to Denny's for a late night fueling and can't contain our energy.
