How far do you commute to work?

I wanted to poll other DISers to see how far you commute to work.

I have an interview for a job that is about an hour and fifteen minute commute (maybe a little less). I am less than excited about taking a job with a commute like that, but the economy is tight and I've been looking for a job for a while. It would be a "reverse commute" - starting in the city, and commuting out to a rural area - so I don't think traffic would be too bad at least in the mornings.

Just curious if others have been in a similar situation!

Both my husband and I have short commutes now (around 20 minutes), but when we were younger he had a 1-hour commute each way. It was hard but, for him, worth it for the experience he gained. It positioned him well in his field. Get in the habit of borrowing audio books - your commute will seem to go much shorter when you are engrossed in a book!

But then it's not that easy to have a very long commute here

I live pretty central in the country. Drive east or west for 45 minutes and I either reach the sea or Germany.
South for an hour and a bit and I'm in Belgium. North is about 2 hours till you hit the sea.

Anything over half an hour, 45 minutes commute is considered very long here

My current commute is an hour and fifty minutes. Thankfully, I was just offered a new job that's a much better position and only 45 mins away, which will be wonderful!

About 4 miles (10 minutes) one way. My wife commutes about 14 miles (35 minutes) one way.

40 minutes. It's kind of a "reverse commute" so there's not much traffic.

I took a job with a 6 mile each way commute, and then the business moved to a location about 23 miles away (45 - 1.5 hour commute depending on traffic). No public transportation available. It was a good job, and I stayed for 6 years after the move. I was offered a job about 5 miles from my house recently and accepted it. My gas bill has been cut by 75%, and my day has been shortened by over two hours

I have two offices I can go to- both about an hour and 15 minutes away. The only difference is one is accessible by public transportation and the other requires driving. However, I only go into the office about 3 days a week, and work from home the other days, so that helps.

I think I had the record this winter though- for about 7 weeks I commuted to GERMANY! Flew out Monday nights, flew back Fridays. So,my commute was about 8-9 hours each way!

50 minutes each way. If there is a sprinkle or any kind of weather it is much longer... I used to drive 20 minutes each way, but then I met DH and moved to his area. I do, however, usually enjoy the time. It is the only time I have to myself. I also listen to books which usually passes the time quickly.

SOme days I really hate it. Most days it does not bother me at all. Gives me time to think.

12 miles, 1-way, all rural. But, I previously had a 56-mile 1-way commute. Unlike you, mine started rural & ended city. I could usually cover the first 45 miles in 45 minutes, and then the next 11 took an additional 45 minutes. Did this for 6.5 years & it was brutal. I didn't mind the drive per say, but traffic was maddening even after I'd learned all the tricks to avoid road rage. If I had been going the opposite direction, it would have been MUCH nicer. Rain sometimes extended the commute to 2 hours, snow made it 3. I timed it once at 10:00 p.m. on my way home from a business trip (office was between home & the airport) & w/o traffic I could do it in 54 minutes

I recommend a disposable car. Not only will you want something easy on gas, you'll want something cheap to replace because it will be pretty much toast in 5 years. Go find something a couple years old from a company with good dealer support, but low resale value so you can save money on the front end (because it won't matter what brand it is when you hit 200,000 miles, the value will be pretty much zero regardless ). edit: I kept my other car - pickup truck actually - and only used it when I wanted or needed to.

My husband does about 85 minutes each way - 5 min drive to train, ride to NYC, quick trip to office. It's exhausting for him, but the job is prestigious and he is well paid. Living in this suburb it's par for the course. This crappy (sorry, that's the best word for it) commute makes it possible for us to afford a lot of things that are important to us, like travel, excellent schools, private coaching, all organic food (lol), that sort of thing. It is not right for everyone but it is the right choice for us.

That being said, the minute our kid leaves for college, we will move back to the city. Only 12 more years ...

I live about 2.5 miles from work. So about 5 mins or so. Depends if I get stuck at the train track.

I work 22 miles from home (24 minute drive). Dh works 4 miles from home (8-10 minute drive). I think the longest commute I have had was 30 minutes.

43 miles each way. very easy drive because it's all highway miles and I leave at 5:30 am. When I worked on the city, it was easier because I took public transportation

^^Those kind of hours can really help. My brother-in-law had a similar commute to mine, but was able to have more flexible hours. He could stay on the main highways & just fly into work where my 8-5 hours didn't allow that
