How far ahead can you buy an AP?

I know that you can buy an AP and wait to activate it at the parks when you get to WDW, but how far ahead can you buy it? Is there a must activate by date? I am thinking of getting one in the near future and hoping to get down there in early Dec, but am concerned that if I'm not able to make the trip, then what happens to my unactivated AP?

It won't expire. You can activate it any time!
