How expensive are WDW taxis? How practical?

We just got back from DisneyLand, where you can go everywhere on foot, and now I'm starting to plan for a WDW trip in a year or 2. I saw on a disboards Facebook post that you should leave 90 minutes before a dinner reservation to make sure you make it or take a taxi.

I realize that estimate was on the conservative side, and that it doesn't always take that long. However, I live with a procrastinator, and I am not convinced our son will be much better, since he will still be a preschooler when we go. I'm planning for us to stay at a monorail hotel, but the monorail won't get us to Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom.

How much do taxis cost? Do you have to reserve them in advance? Are there a lot of taxis available, and does it make sense to plan to use them? Are they available 24/7?

Cost will vary depending on where you are going. Use this calculator for an estimate: http://www.mearstransportation.com/taxi-services/taxi-fare-estimator/

Taxis are usually right at the main entrance of every resort. Or bell services can call one up in a couple of minutes. If dining inside a park, don't forget to allow sufficient time to clear bag check, enter the park and walk to the restaurant. And they ask you to check in 10-15 minutes before your ADR.

Uber is also available, I think it might be less expensive. There is a thread somewhere here on the boards started by a Uber drive that answers just about any question you might have.

You don't need to allow 90 minutes to get from a resort to a park - that recommendation is for getting from one resort to another since it would involve transferring (like from one bus to another), since there is no direct resort to resort transportation. However, that would not be the case if you wanted to go from one monorail resort to another.

One of the best parts about WDW is that they provide transportation for you. To get to a park, we leave 45 mins before we need to be there. For a resort to resort trip, if we need to transfer to another mode of transportation, I give myself a little over an hour. Rarely ever takes that long. If you are running late, I would use Uber.
