How exactly do things work on NYE?

I know that some (most? all?) of the parks fill on NYE. Our current plans are to go in to Epcot for early entry NYE and then leave when things get crazy in the afternoon (or late morning). But, if we want to go back in to Epcot (say, for dinner), will it be possible? Or do we "lose our spot" when we leave the park? (We will be joined by several others who might want to stay in the parks until midnight, but we won't. My DS age 8 will be with us, and he's just not a night owl! And there's no way I can keep both DS and DH in Epcot from early morning to late night with no break!)

Plan B might also be to go to Chef Mickey's, and, of course, that works for us, but if the adults in the crowd want to hit Epcot for late-night celebration, I want to make sure that they can.

Also, did Epcot "sell out" (or close) last year? (I remember that there was a terrible rain storm, but was it already closed when the rain hit? We were at Downtown Disney.

Thanks!
Julie

if you are a resort guest, then you are always guaranteed admission to a park. if the parks are full, and you want to go to epcot, you may end up in MK or MGM, but you will get in somewhere. If I were you, I would take your son back for a nap, but I would really try to have him in the parks (MK if possible) at midnight. They have the best fireworks I have ever seen. It is so cool, and totally something he will remember for a long time to come.
