How early should I arrive?

My DH and DS are going to DL on Monday. The park opens at 8 and it's a non-MM. They want to be near the front of the line at rope drop to get to Star Tours. How early should they arrive at the gates?

Atleast 30 -45 minutes

I would say 45 mins early. We got there 30 mins early and were at least 4 families back. And the best tip I can give is to stay on the sidewalk on the right on Main Street. And RUN. If you walk fast you won't be one of the first ones there. People will pass you up. Crazy I know but it happened to us because I was not about to break a leg to get on a ride.
