How Early Do You Start Planing Your Trip?

I feel a little silly, as I am planning a trip for July 2004!! Am I insane for thinking this far ahead? My last trip was in April 2001, and i began planning about 11 months in advance, but I knew NOTHING!. I'm alot more prepared this time, already.

I am also a little stressed, because as I have been looking for information again, it seems like prices have gone up alot lately. I'll be traveling with dh and 3 kids (who will be 12, 9 and 7) and coming from CA, it will be at least $1200 to get there (if we're lucky)

Any hints for families like ours? Last time, we stayed onsite 3 days and offsite 8 (exchanging our timeshare). We did lots of character meals and special events (Pirates Cruise, Illuminations Cruise, Wonderland Tea party, HDDR and more). I am guessing those won't be in our budget this time. We'll probably have to do the timeshare exchange again. We had hoped to stay at the Poly and Beach Club, but that won't be happening!!

Anyway, any thoughts are appreciated.

Julia

Well we are coming from CA in Dec and I started planning last year. I was going to stay onsite but found a great hotel, Holiday Inn Family Suites, that is close to disney (about 5-10 min away) we have a kids suite on hold which is a king bed room for me and DH, another room with bunks for DD and DN, and a living room with a pull out couch for DS( he is too big for the small murphy bed in with the bunks). There is also a fridge and a microwave, free breakfast buffet for every day of visit, and kids eatlunch and dinner free (ages 12 and under), and they have kid activites there also. I got this for 102.20 per night, and it saved me 85 per night off of the price of the Wilderness lodge, but I figured it even saved me money off of staying at the All Stars too.
Some would say but your not getting the benefits of Disney, but we won't be using EE due to the fact I don't see us getting up that early(time change thing), and this hotel provides a shuttle also,(we will be renting a car anyway).
It was really hard to convince my DH to stay offsite, but as soon as I told him we would have our own room;) , and the fact that we saved over 800 on our budget, he couldn't say no.

A little shy, huh?

Well, I made our room and car ressies on Jan 2, to travel in Dec!
Just waiting a few more days to buy our tickets.

The biggest advantage is that you have all year to pay it off...And a whole year to comfortably swap for the best rates as they come up. But I doubt the room discounts will be beat by AP discounts, however

If you're insane then I don't know what that makes me. I've been plotting and planning a surprise WDW trip for my family since Feb 2002 for an Aug 2004 trip. The advantage of all this pre-planning is that I have tons of time to save the $$$ I'll need to pull this off.

You're right, prices have gone up and probably will go up again before your trip. There's not much you can do about most of the price increases but if you purchase your passes ahead of time, it can help tremendously.

You can buy AP vouchers anytime in advance from your local Disney Store or thru the Disney website. If you're a Disney Club member, you can get a discount on the passes. Order your vouchers before your membership expires, if that is the case. The vouchers have no expiration date and they are not activated until you bring them to WDW.

Because you're a family of 5, you will either need to stay in a deluxe resort or get 2 AllStar rooms for all of you. Either way, an AP for at least one family member (even a child) could save you significant money and may make it affordable to stay onsite for at least part of your stay. You might even want to get them for the whole family if you plan to visit the parks at least 8 days, or if you intend to go back less than one year from your next trip.

Meanwhile, if you do not carry some sort of rewards credit card, get one. Disney will be offering a credit card in March with Disney rewards and perks. Details are sketchy right now but it will not have an annual fee, so it may be worth getting just for any perks and discounts it may offer.

Right now, I have 2 rewards cards. One I use for almost every purchase I make. I pay it off each month and I get 1% cashback, monthly, in the form of Webcertificates. The other rewards card is an airline frequent flier card. It has an annual fee and offers 1 airmile for every $ charged. I use it for major purchases and also pay it off immediately. If the Disney card looks good, I may drop this one or find another frequent flier card --too many restrictions on this one.

My DH is self-employed and all overhead is paid for using a business rewards card. The one he uses is good for a lot of rewards, including Marriott GC's, frequent flier points, car rentals and restaurant GC's. He doesn't know it, but we're going to be using those points to rent a car while in Orlando.

Other suggestions:

Buy Disney Dollars to be used to pay for souvenirs and snacks in the parks. If you just put $20 aside every month, you'll have $240 in one year's time. That's a lot of Mickey ice cream bars!

Start a Disney Fund. Throw all your loose change into it. I collected over $500 this past year alone and I still have 18 months to go until my planned trip!

Hold a garage sale and put the proceeds into your savings for Disney. You may be able to net a couple hundred $$ this way.

Sell some of your unwanted stuff on eBay. They say that one man's junk is another man's treasure. You can also sell old videos and cd's at Half.com for a nice little profit. Since I'm converting all my Disney titles over to DVD as they become available, the VHS tapes are becoming obsolete. Here's a way to get something for them and free up space at the same time!

Subscribe to MouseSavers' newsletter to get the latest discount codes and special ticket offers. The December newsletter offered discount tickets for Disney Quest. They beat any price I could find on the internet elsewhere. I snapped up 4 passes for my family.

Reserve your room(s) as soon as you know your exact dates. You can always change the ressie if new codes come out or you can apply an AP discount to it.

Make your PSs for Hoop de Doo or the Polynesian Luau now. They can be made 2 years in advance.

Order the vacation planning video (it's free) and watch it when you need a Disney fix.

Make a chart to show your progress. Take it out when you get discouraged and see how far you've gotten towards your vacation!

Come to this board often. Update us on your progress and check out any new ideas that members have to offer.

May I add:

Create a schedule (I just made a chart in MS Word) and plot your days. Then split it into three sections (morning, noon, night) and add the different activities you wish to participate in. This should give you a clear idea of how much money you'd want to spend on reservations, tours, meals, etc.

It sure helps me figure out where I will use certificates and about how much I'll need for meals here and there.

You may not think it helps much but when you see the menus, prices here and there and add up the numbers it becomes a concrete fact rather than a speculative thing. You are far closer to your accurate expenses that way.

Hi TreeofLife....

You are right behind me!!! I booked my trip on December 27, 2003 and I will be leaving for WDW one week before you (December 9, 2003). How long will you be staying???

And....to top it off.........we are both from Connecticut!

Maybe I will see you in December!

:D

hehehe Chip.. Must be the water in CT!

We are leaving on the 18th, returning the 27th. Still eight more days to be able to book out arrival flight!

Julia -

It is never to early to plan - that's part of the fun.

2 quick suggestions:
we are doing the Ice Cream Social in the Land for a character thing (it's $6.99 probably the cheapest thing you'll find in Dis)

Also, I have never bought it, but Paramount is selling a 10 pass that seems like a steal. The only catch (which sounds like it works for you) Is it expires 20 days after 1st use,

Good luck
Sandy

I'm always planning our next trip. As soon as we come back, I start planning. Right now, I have no idea when we'll go back (damn finances), but I'm planning anyway.

Hi everyone!
I'm new to this so please excuse... My daughter and I are going on our second Dis trip. We will be going in May 2003. We just decided and I feel really stressed! I've already started madly planning. Trying to figure out PS with places to eat. Has anyone been to Beaches and Cream ice cream shop? My daughter is dying to have a kitchen sink sundae. Just wondered how big is it really?

:earsgirl:

I am constantly in a state of planning our Disney trips. As soon as we get back from one trip I immediately start planning the next. Another suggestion I can offer is to check various airline websites often to get an idea of what you can expect to pay for the tickets, then when you hapen on a really good deal you'll know it. That has helped me a lot. Planning is half the fun for me and it will go a long way in helping your family to have a magical vacation at the Happiest Place on Earth!!

Happy Planning!

I haven't personally seen it, but I watched them make one of the Travel Channel episode featuring the Yacht/Beach club...it's huge! As I recall it's 8 scoops of I.C.- 2 vanilla, 2 chocolate, 2 strawberry, 1 coffee & 1 mint chocolate chip. On the bottom they swirled chocolate, caramel and peanut butter sauces- then the ice cream, the strawberries and pineapple (?), angel food cake and brownies, a WHOLE can of whipped topping, more brownies, a Milky Way bar and Oreos, sprinkles and a cherry.....am I forgetting anything? It floored me! I'd get one if I had about 8 people to share with.

We started planning our trip in 5/2002. My husband is a Reservist, so we called Shades of Green immediately to get a room and we were able to sponsor two other rooms. I also made my hoop Dee Doo reservation then. I bought the PassPorter and have had a great time with that; along with these boards, and WDWIG. I kept my eye on Southwest.com for a long time and scored 4 roundtrip tickets for $762. ($83 each way from Portland OR to Orlando, only one stop).Keep your eye on Southwest if you don't mind no frills. My parents and my mother in law are flying out of San Jose to Orlando to meet us and they got some insane amount like $70 each way---I'm not kidding! Just check every week or so and book it immediately at your first opportunity---they often have those $99 fare specials.

I also have been saving change and selling stuff and converting it into Disney Dollars....we're almost at $200 and it's been painless. That will strictly be our kid's souvenier money and park fun money (like an ice cream bar or popcorn). I will probably bring another $150 for t-shirts for myself and DH and whatever else strikes my fancy. :jester:

I agree with some of the other posts, we are always planning our next trip. But the minute we pick a date it's full steam ahead.

Planning IS part of the fun!!!

45 days left!!!:bounce: :jester: :Pinkbounc

Does anyone know how to get the countdown clock at the bottom of the posts? My daughter and I think it's really neat:)

Let's see....I spent about 10 months planning our vacation last September. I was starting to consider a vacation at Christmas most of that time. We are going to be there on 12/11 of this year. So that makes my planning for this trip about 15 months or so in advance. I haven't booked anything yet, but I will be booking things very soon. We are planning to spend 7 days at the parks and 3 nights with family just before the holidays hit. I can't wait!

PS. If you want a countdown, check the tech support board for details. Mickey

dont forget the meal vouchers from connections.... 11.00 for voucher will get you the kithchen sink as your dessert , plus your lunch!!! whahoo!!!! beaches and cream is great, we ate there 3 times our last trip! i had the "no way jose" awesome!!! cant wait to go again

I started planning this summer's vacation as soon as we came back last year! I had my reservation made and deposit paid for in October and we're not going until June! I am also planning our 2004 trip to Disneyland as I'm excited to go there. I don't think that you can plan to much for Disney!!

I started planning our August 2002 trip in February 2001. Our next trip is scheduled for August 2005, and my family was making plans for it as we flew home this summer! We've already chosen the dates and the resort, and the kids have prioritized the rides and put in their votes for priority seatings. We're sick! Actually, we're just "homesick" for WDW - making plans is a nice way to reminisce about the magic and feel like we're back there - just a little. :)

Planning started Dec 9th 2002 for our trip in late Oct 2004..

Like others have said never too early to start planning !!

Enjoy Michelle
