How early do you purchase electronics?

I know this is way, way early.... but I planned on getting my mom a laptop for Christmas. Staples has one that I could get with the coupon for $208. Which is a bargain and a half!! However, it only comes with a one year warranty, and I would not be paying for the extended coverage on a computer for $200.

Should I wait anyways? We have no other holidays coming up, mothers day but I don't spend $200 on, and then a birthday in October.

You should wait. 10 months is a lifetime in computers and a $200 laptop is already obsolete. It will be a "boat anchor" by the time Christmas rolls around.

It has all the new software in it. Has Windows 8 and everything. That's why I was so impressed with the price, and considering she will probably only use it for the internet, I don't need a ton of bells and whistles.

As already stated above, it will become a dinosour by Christmas. I would wait, deals on laptops are a dime a dozen

Thanks everyone!! I went ahead and purchased it. Since it is only going to be used for the internet, I will give it to my mom for easter, and it's going to count towards mothers day and her birthday!

That's OK then :). Now you need to find another Christmas present, LOL!

There is a warranty issue to consider as well. If you bought an electronics item now for Christmas, you lose a very large amount of warranty coverage. Plus, what if there is a problem when you finally use it? If it's already out of warranty, that's a lot of lost money.

I didn't get the warranty. I'm not paying for a warranty on a $200 laptop

If you are buying it for Easter, it probably won't make much difference if you buy it now or next month. If you were planning on saving it for Christmas, I'd advise against it. Even if she is just going to use it for the internet, you will get a much better computer for the same price in ten months.

Your mom won't care if it is a dinosaur by Christmas if you give it to her at Easter. If you save it until Christmas, you will be kicking yourself everytime you read a Best Buy or Staples ad between now and then and see better processors, memory, etc. for the same price that you paid. It is best not to look at prices or specs now that you have purchased one. ;)
