compare to other areas of the country? Does anyone have lots of experience with grocery buying in Orlando? I live in Michigan and thought I could go to my local Walmart and "window shop" the prices of groceries and have an idea of how much our groceries will cost in Orlando. We are going to use a grocery delivery service to deliver groceries to our resort. I was going to use wegoshop.com because I had heard good things and you can pick which store they shop from...well I decided to take a look at gardengrocer.com yesterday and the prices were much higher than I normally pay! (.99 for a Dannon yogurt, 1.00 for an apple are examples) So, then I started wondering if that is just normal for Orlando. I can't find anyplace on Walmart's website for grocery prices. I grocery shopped 2 yrs ago at a Publix in Orlando and they definately were higher than our local Meijers here in Michigan. So, I'm not sure if I should go with gardengrocer knowing ahead what the prices are. (won't go over our budget this way) or take my chances with Walmart and it might be much less expensive???:confused3

Thanks!

Walmart grocery prices are completely dependent upon the area they are in and the only prices that are the same are the ones that they advertise. I tried Walmart for groceries last July. I ended up walking out and headed to Winn DIxie. The quality of the food was very low IMHO and the area was dirty, disorganized and the fresh foods were not looking too good--some things already had mold on them. My experience may be in the minority, and I hope it is, but for me not worth the trip. I am not a regular Wlamart shopper and only headed there to get a gift card for MIL's Birthday--DH forgot to get her something before we left for vacation and she does shop Walmart. Iwas trying to make it a one stop shop to make things easier on him, and it didn't work out.

I thought that the prices were slighly higher than my local Walmarts. I'll be honest and say that I am not a fan of the Walmarts in Orlando at all! We willbe shopping at Publix from now on!

I found the prices to be similar to the ones in Indy. I'd say about 10% higher on something and on others exactly the same.

They did have weird sizes on the soda that made it hard for me to compare pricing. Their cases were 18ct not 24ct.

ETA~ I had a full grocery list, an entire cart full of food and some cleaning supplies including laundry detergent and a mega pack of diapers and was out the door for $135.

We always shop at the Winn Dixie on Vineland-Apopka Rd (or is it Apopka-Vineland?) Their prices were very close to what we pay at home...sometime better! The store is clean and fairly new. Nice produce. Every time we have been there it has not been crowded.

We stopped at a Walmart last Feb. It was crowded, the people rude, and several items I wanted were out of stock. Why don't you ask wegoshop if they can make a recommendation? With as much shopping as they do I would think they could make a good recommendation about prices and selection. Winn-Dixie and Publix have websites, try looking at those to see if that can help you make a decision. Enjoy your trip!

we had wegoshop pick up things from WalMart for us. Everything we purchased was the same or less then at home.

We also have shopped ourselves at a local Super Walmart (fairly new I believe). It was clean and well stocked and again, some prices even lower then here at home. It was directly across from downtown disney and then down a road about 3 or 4 miles. Kind of like behind Crossroads Shopping center but next intersection and then turn right, ugh! I am terrible with knowing where I am in Orlando and equally terrible at giving directions, I don't drive while on vacation. But it was a very nice location with upscale houseing surrounding it as well as lots of other stores and eateries.

Marge is terrific to work with. She also made a run to BJ's warehouse for us, again same prices as home.

I wouldn't worry to much about the price differences. They are minimal at best.

Both of these WalMart experiences where from 2008 trips.

Thanks so much everyone!

I might see if I can find prices online for winn dixie or publix, if not I think I will stick with Walmart and base my price on slightly higher than I would pay at home....if it's lower...then...bonus!:goodvibes

I'm from Michigan and currently in Orlando. Save yourself the agravation and just place an order. ;)

Walmarts here are NOTHING like the Walmarts in Mi. Just today I left Walmart wondering if they have a rule that the cashiers aren't allowed to speak to the Customers. :lmao: I have had cashiers who did not even get off their cell phone :confused3 .

If it helps you can look at the sale papers for Winn Dixie online www.winndixie.com and get an idea on prices. The prices at Winn Dixie are usually higher than Walmart (But sometimes you can catch a good sale). For example 12 pack frozen chick patties at Winn Dixie 6.99-the same package at Walmart is 4.98. But sometimes WD runs a B1G1 free sale.

We have been to a Walmart in the Kissimmee area and found the prices to be close to what we pay at home. The store we went to was quite new, huge, and clean.

we were just there last week and the prices were comparable to here in OH...

except for milk. I pay $2.39 a gallon here and there it was $3.48! I still can't believe it!

I guess I'm just spoiled here at home, when I talked to other people about it, they said that was comparable to their regular prices.

Also, my credit card was denied there. The person in line in front of mine was also. The cashier asked if we were on vacation and said that has been happening alot lately. I had to call my bank from my cell phone to get it cleared up. :headache:
It was a big pain and a waste of my vacation time, but our cashier was very nice.

(I check my credit card activity everyday, even on vacation, and haven't seen any weird charges due to the "problem"... you never know!)

For experience in living in Alabama, North Florida, and Orlando, Winn Dixie is ALWAYS ALWAYS more expensive then Wal Mart. I can tell the big difference because I always shop with a calculator.
The only exception would be if you get 1-2 items that ran in the sales ad. On a lot of boxed/canned items under $5, Winn Dixie is almost DOUBLE what you would pay at Wal Mart. However, a lot of (older) people swear by their meat/produce quality. My grandma often sends me there for HER groceries, while I always get my groceries at Wal Mart.

Publix is slightly better then Winn Dixie, but not by much. As far as Wal Mart prices, they vary too! There are 4 (maybe 5? lol) Wal Marts in my area and the prices are different between them too! Every Wal Mart I went to in the Orlando area was nice and HUGE!

Publix is the absolute best grocery store, they may not have the lowest prices of the other stores, but overall the prices are very competitive and they run a lot of buy one get one free promotions on a lot of essentials like bread and cereal, plus most stores are nice which makes for a better shopping experience.Winn Dixie is allright and you can find some good deals but I prefer Publix, even though I probably shop at Winn Dixie 1/3 of the time.I never shop for groceries at Wal Mart, the closest superstore is too far from my house, but that's OK,I couldn't stand the aggreavation of dealing with the lines and crowds on a constant basis, even though I'm sure they have the best prices of the 3 stores. Some of the Wal Marts in Orlando are newer and nicer than the ones by me in Miami, the one on Turkey lake rd by Sand Lake hospital in Orlando is the nicest Wal Mart I've been to.It's probably cause it hasn't been as full as the ones down here in Miami which are absolutely insane busy most of the time.

I shop at WM in Mich too! The Orlando one is quite a bit more expensive. But it is close and handy. It's only for a few items, so I didn't worry that much about it. It is more $$ than I am used to though!
