OK total newbie here. Getting ready to make our first ressie for Nov 18, 2011. So here's the question.........We'd like to go the 18-25 but often my daughter's team qualifies for the season ending tournament the weekend of the 19th. She will not want to miss it if that happens. If that occurs we'd like to shift our ressie to the 21-28th. What is the best plan of action for this senario. We'd really like to get in at our resort (BLT) with a MK view. 2 bedroom is preferred but we could fit in a 1 bedroom.

I'd personally book the 21-28 if you think there is a chance at all you would have to move the reservation in the future. BLT rooms have been filling up fast and the liklihood of you being able to change the dates after the home resort priority booking period would be low, especially for a MK view room.

and cancel later the one you don't want .I am facing the same problem but in a good way.
My son and his wife are expecting their first child the week we are due to fly into bwv in July .
new Plans!!!:dance3::dance3::dance3:

If you have enough points, you could book the 18-28 and cancel the unneeded days once the schedule becomes clearer. If you cannot do that, I would lean toward just booking the latter set of dates. Honestly you have almost zero chance of "shifting" the reservation on short notice. And when I say "short notice", I'm talking about less than 6 months in advance for that time of year. I would be very surprised if there are any unbooked rooms at BLT within a couple weeks after the 7 months window opens.

You could book the extra nights and drop them if you need to, but it could leave you with points in holding or unbankable.

Assuming the OP didn't have enough points to book the additional nights, couldn't they borrow the points and book the 18th to the 28th. When plans get finalized either cancel the 18th to 20th or 25th to 28th and make sure the borrowed points get allocated to whichever reservation they keep, and the left over points are still bankable because they're 2011 points.

Am I missing something in my thinking.
I did something similar once and it worked out fine.

I was wondering this too. If I cancel the end days and those were booked on borrowed 2012 can't I put those points back or do they go in holding? I only have 80 2010 points banked, then I'll need all my 2011 points regardless and then I'll have to borrow some 2012 for additional days beyond a 6 day trip.
I guess I thought only the 2010 and 2011 points would go into holding....am I dead wrong here?

Borrowed points can never go back into the year they were borrowed from. They become current year points and must be used before the end of the current UY.

I can think of a couple potential problems here:

1. Banking the points will limit future flexibility. Assuming we are talking about 2011 points that would be banked into 2012, the points would have to be used by the end of the 2012 Use Year. If she can avoid borrowing 2012 points in the first place, the flexibility still exists to bank those points further into the 2013 Use Year.

2. The cancellation date may prohibit banking. For instance, if we are talking about 2011 points with a February Use Year, the banking deadline is September 20, 2011. I doubt that eligibility for a sports tournament in November would be determined by 9/30.

It's also worth considering that DVC reservations need to be canceled (or in this case, adjusted) more than 31 days prior to arrival. If there is a chance that she would want to cancel the night of November 18, the cancellation would need to occur by October 18 to avoid the holding account. I don't know whether that is even realistic or not.

Upon further consideration, I would probably just book November 21-28 and be done with it. Might run into more Thanksgiving crowds but thems the breaks.

Wow this is making my head spin. I am getting confused. So what is the policy if I cancel more than 31 days in advance? What happens to the points if say I cancel 2 days off my ressie and those points were borrowed 2012 points? Leaning towards booking the 18th for a week and the girl will just have to deal with missing her tournament.

all of your pts drop back into that UY. current pts can be banked if you are within your banking window.

as stated, banked and borrowed pts cannot be banked into the next UY and will expire at the end of that UY.

you can specify that they return current year pts if you have those 2 days worth of current year pts used in the reservation.
