Excursions:

S- Either the train or the dog sledding, which one would you do with small children? Don't know how long the kids will just sit on the train.

J- whale watching in the morning, hike on the Mendenhall glacier in afternoon.

K- duck tour? Is this worth it? Fun for kids?

I am so overwhelmed trying to pick out excursions. It's our first cruise to Alaska and we have two small children- under 5. Thanks

I dogsled with my kids and they really like it! Just find out if you have to actually drive the team or if you can sit and hold your child.

We did the train with the "youth activity" in Skagway 2 years ago. Our (then) 8 year old did well on the train between the handheld game we brought and the activities offered.

We did the sled dog discovery & Musher camp in Juneau 2 years ago. You do not drive the sled, but the employees play to their audience. They chose our 8 year old and another young lady to sit in front of the sled, with the 2 sets of parents in the rows behind, and the employee stands behind that and actually drives the team. It was fun for us. My daughter thought it ROCKED!!! she still talks about it! Getting to play with the puppies afterward was also a hit.

We are repeating this cruise this year. We are, in fact, doing a similar dog sled adventure in Skagway this time. And we are planning to do the duck boats in Ketchikan that you mentioned.

In the end, you have to know your kid(s) and what they're capable of handling. If they get bored easily, the train might not be the best choice. Our daughter was fine. If you have a child afraid of spirited dogs that jump and play and want to lick and get attention, then the dog sled adventure may not be your best choice. Depends on what your group likes and can handle.
