You have to also take a hard look at the metrics involved.Looking at that stat you are not 1,000 times more likely to die in a car accident. You need to look at it the rate interms of the number of people travelling. More people travel by cars than by planes, so naturally there are many more deaths. Cars are still not as safe as planes, but they are not 1,000 times more dangerous. It would be interesting to see a statistic that takes into account number injured/killed vs. number travelling.
In my opinion, it's not fair to compare the number of people traving by plane vs auto. You should look at the number of trips made. I suspect that when you take the number of deaths that occured in autos as a percentage of the number of auto-trips made and compared this to the number of aircraft-related deaths devided by the number of flights, you would end up with results that skewed much differently. Also, one must consider the 'survivability' of accidents. Most auto accidents result in a bent vehicle, while most aircraft accidents result in serious injury or worse.
Of course, all these statistics are interesting to look at, but I doubt that anyone is actually swayed by them.
On a different note, this morning, I got up and switched on CNN as I got ready for work. I was surprised to see an image of a life raft bobbing in the water. My happy was quickly dashed as I realized that it was just rehash of the pirate story.
