How does the rental thread work?

I am thinking about buying DVC and I'd like to rent some points and try it out once or twice first. I see that there is a points rental thread but it seems to consist of only offers of points for rent, no questions, so I didn't feel comfortable asking this there.

How does this work? Do I need to rent from someone who has points at the resort of my choice? How do I know how many points I need to rent? I'm not sure who to contact.

I live only about an hour and a half from Disney and would like to just come up for a night or two here and there, maybe at a couple different resorts. We didn't renew our APs this year because I got really miffed about resort parking fees. We're close, but we really love staying on site--I like waking up there and being in the parks bright and early rather than driving up from home in the mornings, and I LOVE heading back to my resort at the end of the day rather than getting in the car for the long drive home. But I was really upset about the resort parking fees because I would have no choice--I can't fly and take the Magical Express.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic. I'm now thinking about buying DVC, the parking issue being one of the reasons. And since you don't pay for parking at DVC resorts I can rent points and stay there and not break my vow never to pay for parking at a Disney resort, haha. But are owners willing to rent just enough points for a night or two? Ideally, I'd like two nights in a studio at BLT (this is where I'm probably most interested in buying) and at a later point (maybe a month later), two nights in a studio at BC/YC or BWV. I'd like to do this fairly soon--as soon as we find out the parks are re-opening, assuming the Florida resident reduced-price tickets are still available. Can I rent points for something like this or do most renters only want to rent out entire weeks' worth at a time? Would it be too late to hope for this--would I need more notice?

You can post a “for rent” thread if you are an owner looking to rent reservations to others. You cannot post ISO threads. Non-owners seeking a reservation can respond to any thread which has not been locked.

If you want to book a resort 11-7 months in advance, you should look for a thread that advertises the resort(s) you wish to try. If the reservation you’re trying for is less than 7 months away, any owner can book at any of the other resorts, with the only possible exception being RIV.

Resort parking is not free for renters, according to the members’ website. Check this thread:

I’ll also add that the brokers will often have last-minute deals where owners offer confirmed reservations at discounted prices. I’m currently not a fan of the brokers but you may be able to find something quickly thru them because there appear to be a lot of owners putting existing reservations up for rent rather than traveling.

As pp pointed out there is discussion on the parking issue. I believe that we will not have our renters paying for parking.
As for your question. Renting does take some trust, but for 99% of those renting on these boards, all is great.
There are some members who would not rent for just a night or 3, but many may do small point rentals, Just ask. \
Smartest thing you are doing is trying before buying. Also take the dvc tour if you have not yet, go in knowing you are not buying that day, no pressure like other time shares.
Plus they will pick you up and drop you off where you like, use this to your advantage.

The DVC member website indicates that renters will pay for parking at all the DVC resorts except for OKW and SSR. Whether they do or not, nobody knows.

Before you post anything at all on the Rent/Trade Board, read all the sticky threads at the top of the page.

One more thing, don't plan on booking a stay a week or two out. You might find a two bedroom villa available for a night or two, or a bungalow or Copper Creek Cabin. But studios need to be booked months out. The closer you are to seven months out, the better chance to have of getting anything. Right now as members are trying to rebook their stays that were cancelled (or the ones they booked for renters), it might be hard to get a couple of nights together. Fall Frenzy is a thing - from mid-Sept through the Marathon in January, it's hard to book seven or fewer months out. Summer isn't difficult. But if you have one of the resident APs, your ticket might not be good for summer months anyway. Summer is easier to book DVC than Fall.

That stinks about the parking fee. It sounds like technically they can and may charge but that they often have not in the past and you can't know for sure if they'll charge you or not.

It also sounds like I'd have trouble getting what I'm looking for anyway--just a couple nights at the "last-minute". Once I buy DVC I know I'll have to plan a little further out and I'm ok with that; I'm just used to doing things pretty last-minute up to now. I also didn't think about everyone trying to reschedule right now and the excessive demand. I may be misunderstanding how it works, but it could possibly be in my favor that we have little information yet from Disney, so many people may be waiting to reschedule. Then once we know what to expect regarding opening, I'd be able to be there the very next day while others may need more time to schedule flights, etc., so I might be able to get a last minute DVC rental simply because I'm able to use it right away. But we'll see. I suppose I also can't put in any rental offers until I know when they're going to be open, though!

I wouldn’t expect many owners to jump on a “rent for the next day” request. They would be taking a risk because if they book it and the renter doesn’t pay, the owner’s points will go into holding or lost completely. If you can’t book 31+ days out, I highly recommend that you go the cash route and book your DVC villas directly with Disney.

Right now, many are having success with summer rentals, but fall through mid January is filling up quickly.

All signs are pointing to DVC resorts opening in June, and to be honest, I think the latest will be mid to late June. I am hoping we here this week.

With the way DVC works, people are booking for times they might go even without knowing because waiting would be a disaster.

Last minute and DVC don’t go together well. Nothing is impossible, but given all the rescheduling, waiting even a few days could mean finding something thst meets your needs and not

A lot will be up to the individual owner, the status of their points and whether DVC continues to give owners a break when it comes to cancellations due to closure. This is a question that you would need to ask the owner you decide to deal with.

Realistically, a lot further out. Even 7 months may not be enough depending on what you want.
