We are going in August and Ive heard a lot of people say the humidity is worse than the actual heat . How does this makes you feel ? I imagine it makes you sweat a lot (nice !)

We have said that we dont want to race around and be shattered when we come home, we want to spend some time chilling by the pool as well as doing the parks.

Im trying to lose weight as Im guessing the larger you are the more it affects you ?

Any tips ?

The humidity affects my hair more than anything else. Think Monica in Friends when they went to Barbados! :rotfl:

My advice is to drink lots of water, take breaks in shady areas and carry a little fan or Magicool.

Sticky!

It affects different people in slightly different ways but I have to admit, although you get varying reports of peoples like or dislike for heat, I have yet to hear someone say "I can't wait for a humid day!"

It can make you feel a bit lethargic, but people cope with it. It is the usual advice for heat - keep well hydrated (remember this means 24/7, not just while you are out in the sun), go easy on the caffeine, take breaks in the shade, air conditioned shows, etc.

You will probably want to have at least 2 showers a day if it is really bad -one in the morning and one in the evening, but it is manageable. It is possibly worse in your mind than in reality. ;)

It's the main reason that we avoid the summer months in Florida!

I remember when I was about 8 or 9 sitting in the Shamu stadium and feeling sweat running down my back :scared1: - now as an 8 year old I had never experienced this before and it wasn't something I enjoyed! We used the mist fans, and tried to stay in the shade.

Make sure that you drink a lot of water as you will dehydrate quickly in the high temps!

We have been in August once before and, despite my DH saying never again, we are going back this year in August.

The humidity is draining and I think you're right in trying to lose some weight before your trip. I have lost nearly 3 stone since I last went to WDW in Auugst (2007) so am hoping I will notice a difference this time.

We tended to visit the parks early in the morning, leave by lunchtime and eithr chill by the pool or have a long lunch at one of the resorts, then return to the parks early evening when it had cooled down a little.

I think the main thing is that, when we have visited in April and October, the early evenings have been significantly cooler, whereas in the summer months, the heat just doesn't seem to let up until much later.

As long as you don't try to rush around too much, take plenty of breaks, drink lots of water and make the most of the air conditioning whenever possible you should be fine.

Good luck with the weight loss :goodvibes

That is soooooooooo funny, that was my exact thought when I read the original thread - I have laughed so much over that friends episode - like looking in a mirror :lmao:

Now that is one serious achievement! Well done! You must be soooo proud of yourself. You should be!

I hate the humidity, I just wilt! When we went in June I was armed with ice-filled mister fans; cooling neck-ties (Walmart or in the parks); frozen drinks and my piece-de-resistance: ice-packed wet flannels in the coolbag!!! Amazing for cooling you down!
I did try to save these for that hideous walk back across the parking lot to the car though! DO NOT FORGET WHERE YOUR CAR IS: those parking lots are like nothing I ever experienced before and there is no escape!!!

Thank you - although it's definitely harder trying to keep it off than actually losing it ;)

I'm going in August and have taken all your advice on board, sorry for butting in to the thread :flower3:

The ice-packed wet flannels sound great, do yu just put them in the freezer the night before and take them with you? Did the ice-filled mister fans last time we did WDW.

I bought some ziplock bag in Walmart and then put the ice and a damp flannel in (one per person). I like the idea of putting it in the freezer the night before though: they'd be even cooler!:goodvibes

If your room has a fridge with a freezer/ice compartment you can freeze bottles of water overnight. When you pack your park bag, wrap a flannel around each bottle. As the water defrosts during the day the condensation is absorbed by the flannel which you can use to cool your face. You also have a steady flow of iced water to sip as it defrosts.

The only thing worth adding is it's all bearable, yes it's different to what you're used to if it's your first time but remember some of the largest people in the world live in the sunshine state and they cope just fine.

I think booze is the worst culprit for making life uncomfortable, a single shandy or beer in Epcot will soak my shirt with sweat within minutes and I'm far from overweight at 14 stone and 6'5". Avoid booze until you're back at your accomodation and drink water not fizzy stuff and it's fine.

If you think Florida is bad, try Singapore, went there on our honeymoon and felt like we'd been hit by a truck leaving the airport the air was that dense.

Oh that is the worst! I know what you're talking about - I describe it as air you can chew but can't really breathe!

The humidity is draining.
As you know, we were there at the same time as you that year, Joh, and the weather was uncharacteristic for August. It was hot and dry with hardly any rain. We only had one day when it was typically humid for the time of year and I remember it very well because it stuck out so much from the rest of the trip. Towards the end of our stay, we met old DIS friends at the Cantina de San Angel for lunch and the humidity was unbearable. We were all literally melting. Later in the day we had the first storm of the trip. We'd been during summer several times before and Matt had been dreading it. It was that day that we remembered why! So, without wishing to be the bearer of bad news, if you thought it was bad in 2007, you'd better hope you get an equally hot, dry summer this year. :o

As an asthma sufferer, my attacks had got few and far between (hay fever has taken over now :rotfl2:) however about 5 years ago, during one of the hottest Augusts I can remember, my asthma suddenly arrived :scared1:. I had no medication and managed to ease it by moving into air-con buildings. Each year since then I have pack my inhailer, but up to yet, have never needed to use it :cloud9:

I bought a water bladder/camel bak thingy for my rucksack last year to take into the parks. I would freeze it overnight and then stick it into the bag and the water was nice and cold all day.
A good rain storm helps ease the humidity for a while.

My husband and I went into the Rose and Crown for a drink a couple of summers ago, and an English couple were sitting beside us at the bar. The pair of them were beet red and looked like they were going to pass out. She told me, 'never again' in the summer!

Florida summers are tropical. The heat and humidity can be oppressive if you're not used to it. Look for shade or stay near air conditioning as much as you can during the hottest part of the day. Drink lots of water (not drinks with lots of sugar). Use lots of sunscreen. You'll be okay! :thumbsup2
