How does Target's Red Cad 5% discount work?

I just got my debit card yesterday -- thanks to the Budget board I am now eligible to save 5% on every purchase made at Target!

Anyway...with the debit card -- how does the 5% discount get applied? Do I have to tell the cashier up front or does it take it off once it realizes I am using the Target debit card?

When you swipe your Target card at the register, it automatically applies the 5% savings at the end of the transaction.

Yes, the debit card is linked to my checking account. I printed an application on line and mailed it in with a voided check. So it's like using my debit card, only its branded by Target and can only be used there. But, I get the 5% savings and I even signed up so they donate $$ to my selected school too!

Yep, it's linked to your checking account. They'll send you a debit card, only to be used at Target, but it comes off your bank account.
To get it, just go through the checkout and tell them you want to sign up. Fill out a quick paper, hand them a blank check and that's it! You get the 5% off that transaction and your card comes in the mail in about a week.
When they ring up your items it rings up regular price, but then you swipe your card and on the receipt you'll see where it adjusted the price.
