How does kids club work?

We are used to the DCL kids club which we love. Is the one at Aulani the same? Can we check our 11 year old son in there anytime? What time do they open? What time do they close? Are there fun things to do for 11 year old boys, not just stuff for little kids? Is it all free like on DCL (or included in our price)?

You can check kids in from 9am to 9pm. My older boy is 11 this time when we're there. He asked to go there everyday. I signed him up for different activities too. He enjoyed his time there and meals there too. However, I saw most of young kids there, he's probably the oldest one there. I did see some posts saying their kids didn't like to stay there. But my sons did both kids club at Disney cruise and Aulani and he loves to go both.

You can do the free options, but there are also add on premium programs/activities that cost money.

Sign them up early or you will need to line up very, very early and still may not get them in. See my thread on how to do it:

Our 10 year old and 8 year old had fun, but they are girls and enjoy playing with younger kids as well as those their own age. While drop-in is allowed, they are at capacity at busy times and no drop ins are taken then. So I would not rely on that option if you really need childcare for a specific time or day. If they are in a registered activity (free or paid), they will take them even when at capacity.

Is the morning waiting in line thing still common? We are toying with Aulani, but if it's a pain to get the kids into the clubs, we'd likely go somewhere else - access to the clubs would be a big perk of Aulani, but if it's a pain it might not be worth it to us. We're used to cruises where you just show up and drop the kids off during open hours (and don't have to get up early and wait in line :) or just doing resorts/hotels without a kids club option
