If I book Airtran via Kayak, I understand I won't have to pay for seat assignments.. is this correct? If so, how does it work and when do you choose for your seating assignments?

No idea about Airtran info, but Kayak is just a search engine for flight prices. You then select the lowest price you want to pay and it directs you to that site for booking. There is no booking with Kayak, they search the airline websites, and other booking sites like expedia, orbitz, etc.
Duds, just click through (under "Details") to the airline website. For some reason when you enter via that door, AirTran doens't charge for the seat selection.

I am also trying to book through Kayak and when I click details, it just shows Orbitz, Expedia, etc...no Airtran. Am I doing something wrong? Could it be possible they are not letting us do this anymore?
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

Yes it still works because I just checked it out. When the AirTran fare comes up while searching using Kayak just click on Select on the AirTran fare and it will give you an option to go directly to the AirTran site directly and it still allows you to chose seats for no cost.
So, just for clarification for the dummies like myself - if I book my AirTran flights through kayak.com...can I still use AT gift certs to pay for the flights, use AT discount codes, and earn full A+ rewards?

Go to kayak.com, do your search. When the results come up, choose the Airtrain flight you would like, it will redirect you to the Airtran.com website. From there you book like you normally would - but it won't charge you for seat selection fees. Pretty slick!
Another thing I have noticed - I have changed my seating a few times since we booked , and it doesn't charge me then, either!
Thanks so much webworm! I went on a different computer and saw Airtran listed, went back to the original computer and deleted any Airtran cookies and voila it works on this one too! I thought I was losing my mind when I couldn't see the Airtran link. You saved us $48!!
