How does it work on the day you disembark?

This will be our first Disney cruise so I am wondering if anyone has any tips to disembark easily? On our last RC cruise, they had a very long line to disembark and it took hours. Some people were complaining they might miss their flight due to how long it took. I would rather get off the ship early so we had time to enjoy our day in San Diego since we only have one day there. Is it possible to carry your own luggage and leave the ship early and quickly? What sort of breakfast options are available the day you disembark? Any tips for getting breakfast easily?

Thanks!

If you are disembarking in San Diego, you will have to wait until your luggage tag is called (group Daisy, group Mickey) etc unless you do express walk off. If you choose express walk off you do NOT put your luggage out in the hallway. you keep everything with you and carry it all off the ship with you once the ship has been cleared by customs (this usually happens around 8am but could be a bit earlier or late depending on the port).

As for breakfast, if you are early dining for dinner then you will be early dining for breakfast so you can go to your restaurant for breakfast first before walking off or you can go up to Cabana's to grab something to eat, they are open til about 8am for breakfast I believe.

The final morning you are assigned to a specific seating time for breakfast, based on your dinner seating time. Early seating is usually around 6:45 and late seating 8:00.

The final night you place your (checked) bags outside your room. DCL will see to taking them off the ship. After breakfast, you depart the ship. This particular part of the process varies, depending on the port. I believe in San Diego, you debark based on the luggage tags DCL supplied you to put on your bags. Generally, this is the way it happens in the smaller terminals. They hand out the luggage tags based on your post cruise travel information you give them.

Once off the ship, you claim your bags in the terminal and then take them with you through customs.

Yes, you can take your own bags off, if you wish. I find that people handling their own bags can be a real issue (elevators are small, limiting how many people can use the elevators). And they don't seem to mind who they run into in the crowds of people waiting to debark. Not sure if DCL does it the same, but most cruise lines have early debarkation for those handling their own bags. You need to debark as soon as the ship is cleared for debarking (usually around 7:30).

Only other option for breakfast that morning is the buffet. It's usually open until 8:00 for service, but you can remain there until around 8:30.

FWIW that can happen on any cruiseline. Delays can happen.

Yes. On Royal, too. In case you didn't know. :)

2. Start crying

START crying? Oh gosh I'm welling with tears once it goes beyond the halfway mark on a cruise.

The final morning Cabanas opens at about 6:30, I am usually up and dressed by then and go up and eat. I grab the DW something to eat and bring it back to the room. We usually head down about 7:30 bags in hand. For express walk-off they require for you to take everything off with you.
