Yesterday I bought my dad one of the old fashioned popcorn carts. The very small replica of the carts in Disney. He tried it out for the first time yesterday, and the popcorn was very bland. We even bought the buttered flavored popcorn oil to add and it still came out with no flavor. Now of course we can melt butter in the microwave and pour it over the top, but does anyone know how disney gets their popcorn to pop out with flavor? I have never seen Disney add anything after it has popped, so it must be something they add to the popper before it pops, right?

I know this is a silly question, but my dad is in love with Disney's popcorn, and I really wanted to try and recreate it for him.

I'm sure it's pixiedust:pixie dust in the popcorn::popcorn!
If you've ever had a hotdog at a ball game, they always taste better than the ones you can make at home!;)

I was looking at info re: new food offerings at DCA when the expansion opens (Carsland), and they will have new Dill flavored popcorn! It sounds so good. Really hope to see that come to the World.

This is wildly off-topic, especially because I've never even had popcorn at Disney World, but we do have a home theater and one of those popcorn carts. We have found the trick is melting real butter in the popcorn maker (the drum) after the corn is popped and then slowly drizzling it over the top. (Hold the lid closed when you turn it over and the solid butter spins and melts while the melted butter drizzles out.)

We've tried all kinds of oil, based on suggestion, and the best taste for us is starting with organic popcorn (don't know if that matters, but it's what we always use) cooked in plain old peanut or sunflower oil (that fake neon orange gunk is terrifying), then topped with real butter (about 2 T per batch; though your mileage may vary based on cart size; ours is relatively large compared to some I've seen) and popcorn salt (finer than regular salt; available in grocery stores). Another good topping option is truffle salt, available at most gourmet stores (and not cheap). I'm not even a big popcorn fan (husband and son adore it), but I love it with truffle salt.

I used to work at an ice cream shop and we had a popcorn popper in there too - we sold some but it was mostly snack for employees:thumbsup2

We used sticks of butter type oil and lots of bright orange popcorn salt. It went in the kettle with the oil and the popcorn. If you just used the oil it was very bland. If we overdid the salt it occasionally had to be thrown out or mixed with a bland batch and you had to watch out for the neon looking pieces! :laughing:

How do they get the popcorn to taste so good??? Well Disney is a "magical" place,so,,,,magic

You need to buy the "professional" ("movie theater") cocoanut popcorn oil.

There are many kinds, but THIS is one example.

That's it! Adding the finely ground popcorn salt during popping helps as well. Any flavored coconut oil (a solid at room temperature) is what you want.

Popcorn salt is key. It's finer and sticks to more places on the kernel. When I worked in a movie theatre, we would put the oil in the hopper, let it heat, measure the popcorn kernels into a cup, pour a generous amount of popcorn salt on top of that, then pour the popcorn and salt into the hot oil in the hopper.

Disney uses a special oil manufactured just for them. I know that it contains coconut, canola and vegetable oils. As well as butter and what Disney calls (flavor enhancers). Other than that there recipe is 3cups of corn, 1/2ramkin of salt and about a cup of oil. There cooking process is also very strict, you must turn off heat and motor at certain times.
