How does a split stay work?

For a split stay in a DVC unit, will Disney still move luggage? (anyone done this recently?) Do you have to go to the new resort and check in, or will they check you in at the first resort for the entire time (across both places)?

Disney will move your luggage. Drop it off at bell services, or have them come up and get it.

Check in at both. They are considered separate reservations. When you are leaving the first resort, check out at the front desk. That will enable your magic bands to work in the second resort as soon as you get a room ready text.

I do split stays every trip, although not DVC so not sure if they work different. I always call down and check out of resort #1, I'm told you can do express checkout if you have a cc on file but it has never worked for me. We go to resort #2 and go to the front desk and check in. We do this even if we have done on line check in, just to let them know we are there in case they have a room ready earlier. We are not picky about room location or view so lots of times we can get into a room pretty early. We store our bags with bell service and then head on to a park. We drive down so have our car with us and the only exception to this is , if we plan on doing AK that day, we go ahead and drive to the park and do the park then go to the resort and check in. We do this if it's early rope drop time and we only plan on being in AK until about 11 or so. I prefer not to drive to a park and deal with parking but sometimes it just works that way.

As mentioned, it is helpful to go to the front desk at the first resort and have then check you out as I have not always done that...do split stays a lot of my trips...and I never get the room ready text at my 2nd resort,

When luggage transfers, it usually won’t be there before 3 to 4 pm. So, if you want to do pool time waiting for the 2nd room, be sure to leave that out.

Because you could be homeless between the stays, we always make it our Disney Springs day. We stay out late the night before, sleep in, check out at 11, bring Our things to bell services, and then head to DS to eat lunch and shop. By the time we finish and head back to resort #2 it’s pretty close to 4 pm and our room is usually ready.

I have had problems if I didn't go to the front desk to check out before I checked into the second resort. Don't call, you get the call center and not the front desk.

never done a split stay but if we do, I feel like this is a great plan and will copy it.

thanks for sharing!

Yes, check out at desk, yes tell cast member your plan, yes have them deliver your luggage, yes have patience at the end waiting for luggage to arrive. (Sometimes it's quite a wait so plan your day accordingly). Only other option is to minivan or otherwise drive your luggage over to new resort yourself, hold them at Bell Services, retrieve them yourself when room is ready.
