How do you view "Convince Me" threads?

I think there are a few reasons that threads start out "Convince Me to...."

1) They are created by complete imbeciles who actually seek out the advice of total strangers (Such as..."Convince me that it's okay to leave my kid alone in the tent at night while I go to the comfort station to pee.")

2) They are created by trolls

3) They are created by people who are tired of reasons 1 & 2

4) They are created by Fiends that want to know the answer to the ultimate question of WWLD?

What do you think?

They are created by resorts board folks......

That is the main language of the resort boards. Lots of threads have convince me in them. It's SOP over there and they don't find it annoying.

Then someone asks about the cabins, they are sent over here, use the same language, and BAM!!!

I agree. They don't know the camping board un-written rules and are slammed when they try to play by the rules the rest of DisBoard plays by.

There needs to be a BIG sticky at the top of the camping board main page that says:

"DON'T ASK TO BE CONVINCED!!!!"

This is how I think most of those threads get started too. The resort boards are full of all different people asking about a wide variety of resorts. There are quite a few resort snobs who would never think of staying at a value resort, and maybe not even a moderate. Something comes up (birth of a 3rd child; a friend wants to come along on vacation; or maybe the in-laws are tagging along) and they decide to look into resort accomodations with higher occupancies. The cabins can sleep everyone, but mom or dad thinks "ewww, I am SO not a camper!" So they come here to find out whether the cabins are as bad as they imagine them to be. That's how some of those threads include language like "my kids would really enjoy it...they love the outdoors". They assume that they will hate it and are rationalizing booking the cabins because "at least the kids will enjoy it", and the cabin can fit everyone. And compared to some of the villas they are relatively inexpensive.

What most of these folks don't realize is that, intended or not, they are insulting those of us that LOVE the Fort. They may assume that people would only choose the Fort because we're poor and can't afford anyplace else. We know better, and by nature we get defensive. So it tends to turn into a perceived class warfare...not actual class warfare as it's quite possible the person with the "snobby" attitude has more modest financial means than the very Fiends they are arguing with. They just assume they are financially better off because they typically stay at a moderate or deluxe resort while we typically are at "the campground", so we must be poor.

That's my theory.

Oh, and also any of Deb's options could be true; especially #1.

Or...it's just a matter of semantics.:confused3 It's an expression. Not every inquiry in this regard is a troll. I do think there have been those who post with a genuine inquiry regarding FW, and want to know what it may have to offer in regards to their particular situation. I don't really think the words "convince me" are worth getting your panties in a bunch over. :sad2:
If the phrase is followed with a "look down your nose" type of attitude, as previously mentioned, thats one thing. pirate: Only sometimes, and (I've got my flame suit on)..it's merely an expression, and us Fiends seem to have our backs up in defensive mode. If someone is stupid enough to think the Fort is beneath them and they need to be convinced to stay there, that's their loss. If the "convince me" is posted in the regular camping forum and not the community camping forum, then it's posted correctly, and either someone can answer the inquiry...or not.
Sure, they are directed over here from the resort board when inquiring about the cabins. In fact, :guilty: I'm quite sure I've done that myself. I'm sure I've told a poster or two inquiring about the cabins they'd find the camping forum more informative. Some weren't even aware that there was a forum specific to FW here on the Dis. It's been my experience over the years that I've been a member of the camping forum that folks here are genuinely a friendly, helpful bunch.:thumbsup2 I know when I venture out of our little home here...I am astounded by how rude posters in the other forums can be to one another. That has never been my experience here.

I'm tryin to save up enough to stay at the All Stars so I can say I actully stayed at a Disney Resort. My friends at the pig roast and turkey shoots will be inpressed.:rolleyes1:rolleyes1 I just hope they gots me some moon pies and rc coke cola over thar.

By definition it leans towards an argument:

con·vince (kn-vns)
tr.v. con·vinced, con·vinc·ing, con·vinc·es
1. To bring by the use of argument or evidence to firm belief or a course of action.

"Tell me about" or "What is so great about" would be a better header for the questions. IMHO

You know, I have a problem with newbies saying "Convince Me". To me it smells of "I really don't want to do this. Convince me that I should do this."

If I am new to a board and have questions, I state that I am new and can anyone tell me about... I certainly don't use the phrase "convince me".

Oh..I agree with ya there. :thumbsup2I don't use it myself. I'm just saying that "term" (if you could call it that:rolleyes1) is used pretty often on the resort boards and in other forums for that matter.
I don't necessarily think it has the same connotation attched to it, as we take it with here. That's why I feel you have to read the entire post and base your response on that...not just the "convince me" part of it, which is bound to make most of us here cringe at the mere mention of it.

'Convince me' and 'I'm not sure if this has been asked before' (insert too lazy to search) gets me but my number one is...drum roll please....

Starting a post with the word 'so' as in 'so I was thinking of going to the park on Friday'.:rotfl2: I know it's not worth getting my trousers in a twist but it really does, not sure where that comes from in grammar useage nowadays. That and the word ressies, just call it a reservation or ADR!

It depends on of it is about the right toilet paper or not.:scared1::thumbsup2

Convince me that reservation is easier & faster to spell than ressies please.:thumbsup2

Sorry, not going to be able to convince you of that. To each his own opinion, personally find it annoying, JMHO. Your mileage may vary, no warranty is expressed or implied.

because most of them are soccer moms who with the use of internet, latte' and cell phones can now not do anything unless it is planned out and agreed to.
