How do you share a room with an acquaintance?

I recently got back from a cruise with a friend. When we registered, we put down our separate home addresses. Cruise docs were sent to each of us at our own address. We left a note for the stewardess on the first night that we wanted the sofa bed turned down. We had our own accounts for charging on the ship. When we went to Palo, the server even asked if we were doing separate checks.

But those initial cruise payments -- that's where it gets tricky. My friend and I agreed to pay in full a month before the true PIF date. That way, if either of us DIDN'T fulfill our end of the payment, the other would have time to pull out. However, it DID cross my mind that, if my friend was secretly villainous, she could request a refund from DCL the night before the PIF date, and if I didn't catch it, I'd have a 1/2-paid cruise and... well, probably a cancellation and loss of my deposit! Nooo! (Of course, that didn't happen.)

If I was traveling with someone I didn't know very well, I think I would go through a TA and explain the situation, and have both parties agree that we pay in full x number of days/weeks before the cruise. Then if the other person tried to get a refund or back out, I would HOPE my TA would raise the alarm.

I agree with the person who said two sets of docs will be sent if different addresses are given for each person. This happened when I booked a cabin for my son and daughter who live at different addresses, even with the same last name. Each got their own luggage tags and reminders.

I've had 3 experiences with sharing a cabin. With my Sister and a cousin, we agreed sisters share the bed, and cousin had the sofa area. It worked out well. Cousin paid less than we did.

With a friend one time, and an acquaintance another, I had the bed, the other the sofa area. This was determined before hand, we all agreed, and I think it worked well. Each time, I paid 1/2.

In April, 3 of us will share a family veranda cabin. We each have a place to sleep, ( cousin gets bed, I get Murphy bed, friend gets sofa ) we each pay 1/3 of the cost, this was agreed upon. We'll see how that works out!
