I have seen lots of posts about renting DVC points but what is the exact process for doing so? We may have some points to rent but I have no idea what to do and I want to make sure I do the right thing for us as well as the member renting the points? :cool1:

Go to the rent/trade board to read about how to rent your points. You are actually going to post them on that board, but before you actually do that, you have some decisions to make. How do you want to be paid?--check or PayPal, or something else? Do you want the money in smaller chunks, or do you want all the money at once? Decide how far in advance before check-in you need your money--you should have it at least 45 days ahead. And, are you going to allow transfers of points to another member's account, and how do you want to be paid to ensure that a transfer doesn't rip you off? Also, would you prefer last-minute rentals, or do you want people who are renting a year ahead of time? Write down your answers so that you have a response when people ask, and DO NOT volunteer to check with MS until you have a solid commitment for your points--Lots and Lots of people troll this board who are interested if there is availability, but they don't actually want to rent points, they are just being nosey. :confused3

Thank you for responding. I infer from your comments that it is a good practice to ask for complete payment before you book their reservation? Can you cancel their reservation if they do not pay the balance?

To transfer points, do I have any recourse if they do not pay the balance? Seems like on a transfer of points you would want full payment in advance.

But then again, the buyer is trusting that you will come through. Is their anyway to assure that both parties are protected?

I have rented points several times when I know I would not be going to Disney or use the points elsewhere.

First, if you transfer points to another member the transaction is permanent. You cannot recup the points. When I transferred points I requested half payment and the balance at the completion of the transaction. There is an element of trust for both parties in this type of transaction. I have executed this type of transaction successfully several times.

Second, when I rent my points I request that the party pay half when I confirm the reservation verbally and the balance when I send the written confirmation. In addition I also use a simple lease form more for the comfort of the renter since they are sending a sizable amount of money on trust.

The renter can access the reservation via member services once you have a confirmation number. You should not distribute your membership number to anyone even when you are transferring points.

Third, it is advisable to establish a paypal account it faciltates the transaction. Also, as the owner you controll the reservation and it can be cancelled if the renter does not pay the balance.

Thus far my experience has been very positive and I have met very nice people via this process. Any serious renter knows they are getting excellent accomodations at excellent prices. And, the renter is now able to obtain the Disney Dinning Plan effective April 1st, which seems to be a good deal.

In my opinion there is more of a risk renting the points since the owner controlls the points. The renter can check with the Orange County Comptrollers office to ensure you own at Disney since it is recorded there.

I hope this information helps and good luck renting your points.
