How do you pronounce Halloween?

I just spent five minutes trying to determine whether I there a difference between the verb "haul" (I'm hauling a bunch of kids around town) and the noun "hall" (down the hall, first door on the left) ...

Not to be confused with HAL (the computer from 2001, or Green Lantern Hal Jordan).

I said "other", because I think I switch between both pronunciations.

I say with Hal - even though I know that haaul would be proper considering the word's origins but a lot of it in accent. (My friend insists that the man's name Don and woman's name Dawn aren't the same).

But my friend's little girl took care of it all a few years ago in our circle by inventing thee word "hubbowee"

Don and Dawn are pronounced completely different to me - lol. Of course I have a NY accent though.

Same for me, but I know a few people from Pittsburgh who say them both the same way. I think they have the "Dawn" down pat but are throwing in a weird "o" sound on Don.

Hal -oween here where "hal" rhymes with "pal." I'm from the South. We definitely say "peh -kahns" and hate it when people say "peee-cans."

Hollow-een. First syllable is the same as the word holiday. Clearly, pronunciations of certain words vary depending on region. So what? I don't think there is a "right" way or a "wrong" way, just different.

Those of us from the NYC metro area especially, seem to have more differences from most of the rest of the country. Yes, Don and Dawn are different to me, so are Aaron and Erin (short A sound vs. short E), and Carrie and Kerry. The trouble is, it's hard to explain in writing how to pronounce something without being able to hear it.

That's because you don't know how to pronounce them correctly!

For Don, think of when you go to the doctor and are told to stick out your tongue and say "Ahhhhh.' That's Don. D-ahhh-n.

For Dawn - think of "awwwww" or Yawn. Dawn.

I think the most bizarre accent difference that I honestly didn't know what shee was saying was a lady from Windsor asked if I wanted a 'hainer'. Twice or three times I just couldn't understand and she said "a hainer, a coat hainer, a hainer to hain your coat on." LOL

I go to Michigan a lot and they call pop pap. theres probably a few states where they do that. I'm in Ontario and Dawn and Don sound the same. They are both pronounced like yawn with a d here. I'm about 2 hours from Windsor and I pronounce hanger as hang-grr

I've got other friends from Windsor and they don't say 'hainer' either - maybe it was just one of those words that she pronounced wrong when she was a child and nobody corrected her. I heard an adult refer to going to the 'bafoom' the other day. I've heard plenty of children say 'bafoom' until they learn bathroom but not an adult.
