How do you prevent your migraines?

I went to my internist today. We're going to try another blood pressure medicine and hopefully that will work without lowering my BP too much. She also ordered another MRI and some bloodwork.

Add me to the sufferer's club...I am 43yrs. old and have suffered from them since I was 3-4 yrs. old. I have never taken anything but over the counter....didn't know there was anything until about 8 yrs. ago. There has never been any pattern to my migraines. Once I feel them comming on, I take 3 Tyl or Advil, go to bed in a very dark room. I have double room darkning shade on my windows just for this purpose. Not always, but, sometimes I end up in the bathroom vomitting. I have to go to sleep in order to get any releif.....Recently I became very sick and suffered migraines for 3 1/2 months 24/7 along with many other symptoms. Tried styroids 3x with no help...Because of all of this I went to a Nero. I was given Imatrex and Topamax. I was told thatTopa was a nasty drug, so I didn't take it.....The Imatrex help the first 2 times I took it....I was so excited to be able to function w/a slight migraine. Well now it doesn't work....I think I will stick to the otc stuff. Atleast I know what to expect with them.
I too was hoping that my DD wouldn't get them.....but, I have shared them with her. She has had them also since 3or 4 yrs. old. And we never have them at the same time. When she has her's, she has always wanted me to lay down with her. When I have mine, STAY AWAY FROM ME, AND LET ME SLEEP.

Coffee works for me if I drink it every day, and also if I drink it when I see my "aura" (a flash before my eyes). Mine are mostly "occular" migraines, where I lose my vision. My sister gets them too. She was on some sort of medication to prevent them too, though. I think that she had a lot of pain associated with them. If I don't catch my aura quickly enough, I'll end up very nauseous as well. That's the worst! I have Compazine suppositories for that, thank goodness.

I've only read the first page of responses and thought I'd give what I've been through.

When I was in a severe depression, I was getting them very VERY often, nearly 5X a week, mostly rebounds. My neuro had me on Vicodin, Midrin, Maxalt, Ocpital nerve blocks and in the end Morphine patches. This was just before the revelation of botox for Migraines. I lived my life in a fog. It was horrendous.

Yes, I was addicted... I've since recovered. I have to be careful with my migraine regimines these days.

Currently I'm using Topomax, The first week I had panic attacks, and now I'm nearing my 3rd week, those have tapered off, and the headaches have as well. On the 2nd night of taking them, I got the MOST horrendous headache that I've had in 5 years, I was close to going to the ER, but Sleep, and a LOT of sleep took it away. Last week I had a migraine but it was nothing compared to what I've had in the past.

Next week will be the real challenge. It's the Monthly migraine. We'll see how it handles that one. Over all, I think I like Topomax. There are some studies out there that are beginning to link Seisures with Migraines... Who knows.
