How do you plan for a large family trip a year out?

The title didn't give me enough room to type out my whole problem booking for next year but I'm sure others have experienced it :headache: We are long time DVC so know how it works, just stressing a bit about the variables and need some opinions. We own at OKW so will book there next month for the kids spring break trip March 2017. Here's what is driving me crazy. It will definitely be me, DS and his GF and DD. DD's BF might join us and DH most likely will. I see the benefits of going with the 2 bedroom as well as the studios. If everyone does come however, I don't think 2 studios will work and I really don't want to spend the points for 3. I will though if that option makes the most sense. The reason I would like the studios is that it gives the opportunity of buying the DDP for one room and sharing it. We typically do 3-5 TS in a week and being that we're bringing newbies will definitely do some of the most expensive buffets. I like the idea of the 2 bedroom for the fact that we will have more time together and the laundry room. We may do some quick breakfasts in the kitchen but no full meals. I do plan on trying to switch to BC or AKV at 7 months so I'm not really considering the fact that there's two beds in the studios or that the 2 bedrooms are huge. I have got to decide as my 11 month is coming up.All opinions wanted/needed. Another thing I have to consider. DH may come later in the week. If I did book the dining plan, could I just add him as a guest when he arrives as we would prefer to share the DDP credits anyway?

You used to be able to add guests later but from my understanding they may now have to cancel and rebook your room if you try to do it onsite so you may find that to be a problem.

Adding guest names should not in any way affect a reservation. It's no different than adding a request. Unless something has changed drastically, adding/removing names should be easy-peasy.

I would book a 2BR at OKW at 11 month mark and then hopefully plans will firm up by 7 month mark when you can switch resorts. You can switch room types then too and add names.

I meant adding a guest say on day 3 of a weeklong reservation. I've read others add people at checkin and it doesn't affect ddp but I'm not sure.

Eeyoresmom, I missed the last line of your OP where you were asking about the dining plan. Dining plan does complicate how you can "juggle" guests on any one rez.

To do so purposefully to avoid the DP would be dishonest plus it would now require them to cancel and rebook the room which offers risk. But if you truly don't know if he's coming or not, I'd leave him off if you're doing the DP and don't need ME, at least until you know for sure. Personally I'd do the 2 BR and forego the DP or plan enough meals that I could use it buying for all parties but 2 studios is OK. With the 4 committed to the trip (if I read correctly), one studio won't do it anyway at either of those locations for the 4 (IMO) due to the bedding arrangement of the studios (queen and pull out love seat). It doesn't sound like the murphy bed would help much in this situation even where applicable. You might also consider a 1 BR at Kidani instead with the 2 baths and sleep 5 arrangement but only if you won't have the 6 total.

Hi Hon
I am in the process of planning a family (6 people) trip for next March Spring Break also. OKW is my home resort. All of them have been to Disney before. I have read some posts on this process so I recently held a family meeting explaining the following:

I don't want to have to bank or lose points--I told them I need a commitment before making reservations.

I explained exactly what I was paying for and what their cost obligations were.

I discussed touring styles (I am an early riser and early to bed person), ( Two in my family are pool and water park junkies), (One is a Universal fan and has no interest in Disney Theme Parks.).

I explained the recent price increase in Park tickets.

Following the meeting we are down to 3 confirmed and one maybe depending upon vacation request.

I am so glad I held this meeting as I am now down to 1 studio or a 1 bedroom.

Best wishes to you and your family
Hugs Mel

P.S
We also talked about the Dinning plan and voted to just buy our own meals as we go.
Most of us will buy the rapid refill mug for length of stay.
I will pay for one special family meal.

Thanks.I have been stuck banking points several times and am really trying to avoid that. Also, being spring break there probably won't be much room for switching things around as far as availability. One of the "maybes" is a college kid and has to defer to his parents for some of the decisions involved (rightfully so), but it does complicate things.
