This will be the first time we have flown since 9-11 and all the security rule changes. We have to bring my son's insulin, syringes, tester, lancets, & test strips.
These will definitely be going in our carry on. Can not take a chance with them in the checked luggage as they are a medical necessity.

Any suggestions on how these should be packed? Would you bring the box of syringes with the RX on it or leave the box home? Would a note from the doctor be recommended?
Thanks for your help.

We have NEVER had a problem taking DH insulin supplies. I don't take the original box that any of the supplies came in (way too bulky), I just pack all of the supplies is a small plastic box or small insulated lunch bag and have them in my carry-on bag. TSA screeners see thousands of these type supplies each day and understand their importance of keeping these medications and supplies close to the patient. If you choose, you can also take any type of ice pack (even gel pack) to keep the insulin cool.

We have never need the original Rx, note from doctor, or Rx label. However, if it will give you peace of mind by all means take one with you. I also take extra supplies - just in case of emergency or travel delay. With the insulin supplies we also pack a few small snacks that can help maintain blood sugar levels also just for peace of mind.

Enjoy and have a great trip!!!

The small plastic box or insluated lunch bag is a great idea.
Do you leave them in your carryon when you go through security or do you take them out like is needed with liquids?

I always leave the case in my carry on bag and only once did TSA ask me to remove it from my bag. It was never an issue.

DH packs everything ..insulin, syringes, alcohol wipes, tester and strips.... everything .... in a dedicated fanny pack. Only thing in that fanny pack is his medical stuff. It comes off his waist to go through the security screening. He's never been questioned about it, never even had it opened by security. :thumbsup2

Now his Disney Pin books, that's another story.

We fly in a couple of weeks with our diabetic DD. I am planning on putting her insulin pens in a FRIO pouch and extra insulin in our Diapak with an icepack. Her extra needles, test strips and alchol wipes will go in a big zip lock bag that I will carry in our carry on. I will probabaly take copies of her RX labels just in case we need to get one filled.

Otherwise, the supplies she needs immediately we will have in our carry case with her tester.

I bought DH a travel kit thing for his insulin supplies. It is kinda cool it keeps everything organized and even has a waste bag for his used syringes. Has a freezer pack to to keep everything cold. DH had his dr write a note but it was never needed when we went through. We just told the tsa screener that there was diabetes supplies in the bag when we put it in the thing to be scaned.

DH's soda that he bought after going through security at the airport store had more screening then his supplies did LOL

We have a combination cooler bag/back pack.

The top is a back pack and we keep all needles, pump supplies etc. in it.
The bottom is a cooler. We have a cooler pack in it with the insulin and 1 juice box. (Perscription label on the insulin box). We put this in a clear 1 quart bag.

We carry another clear 1 quart bag with the warm insulin, glucogon, glucogel and another juice.

We always tell the security guard before going through and we carry a letter from our endo but no one has ever asked for it.

Have a good vacation!
