How do you know what pins to buy or trade?

I am not new to pin collecting, but always wonder how you decide what pins are "must haves." How do you know which are the most valuable? And, how do you know what trades are bad or good?

We don't. My kids go with whatever they like to look at. We have some LE's that they know are good to save but other than that it is whatever strikes their fancy.

I just don't get into all that. I just buy the ones I like, I go after the Lilo & Stitch pins for the most part. And then I do get some Mickey, Minnie Mouse, resort pins also. And I don't do a whole lot of trading, just case the ones I buy I never really like to trade( they mean something to me).

I will buy pins a lot of times that have some meaning and get them framed. After 9/11 I purchased as many different Mickey flag type pins around 20 or so from ebay. I took a small American Flag and took them to a framer and had them positioned all around the stripes. It came out fantastic. Another great one I have is I collected all of the Mickey Country pins from Epcot and then the individual country Pins from Epcot. I had the commeritive Epcot ticket from 1982 and had the framer position the ticket in the middle and then the Mickey ears of the country flags on top and then the country pins on the bottom... Came out great. If you want try to buy pins that you like and consider framing them as artwork. Enjoy.

What type of frame do you use? Is it a regular shadow box/pin holder type frame like the sell at Michaels?

I have some I would like to frame.

On really good pins I frame them with a frame store. On others I"ll take a snapshot for example, I took a great shot of the castle and make it into an 8x10... Then I took the baloon pins with the characters on them and poped off the backs with pliers and hot glued them all around the castle. I bought a regular frame that worked really well. The character hat pins I did buy a shadow box frame and hot glued them inside. The American flag and Epcot flags went to a framer. Believe it or not it was not that expensive when you conside what it would cost if Dis made it....

I agree with David. Collect what you like - don't concern yourself with "value." Value is subjective. What I may think is valuable, you may not.

Look at Ebay. THere a a bunch of pins listed. Some have bids, many do not.

We collect pins from things that have special meaning to us. Whether it be a ride we love, a place we love to eat or something along those lines. When we first starting pin collecting and my boyfriends son was young he was afraid to go on Splash Mountain. I don't want to say we "bribed" him but we said he could get a pin from SM if he rode it, which he did and loved and still loves to ride it to this day. I love the 3:00 parade from MK. I took a great picture of the start of the parade with the banner and "Walt" drawing and purchased all the pins that corresponded to this parade. I put the picture in the center of a mat and placed all the pins around it. I did the same thing for Fantasia 2000 - I got a picture of the movie poster and surrounded it with pins from the movie. This past May we went for my 40 something birthday so I made sure to get a birthday pin (along with the birthday buttons from the different parks) and pins from the different places we ate. I also collected some of the cast member only pins that were out at this time. I LOVE the parking lot pins and got all of them. I am planning on framing this also - just not sure how yet. I also received a Magical Moment Certificate from lunch at the castle on my birthday. I want to frame this one also along with some pins - maybe the birthday pin.

Best advise is the pin is worth something to you because it reminds you of something wonderful.
