How Do You Know if You Have Points?

Not exactly "new" here, but unfamiliar with this concept. I've participated in several threads lately where posters have commented on receiving "points" against them and even one thread that was deleted altogether (which I find very rarely happens on the DIS...I must have missed something that was a doozy...). Have I perhaps also gotten "points" and been unaware? Is there a limit at which these "points" accumulate and result in some sort of consequence similar to demerits on your drivers license? Please advise.
